DRYING OUT--Wow, was that a wild weekend or what? Just when you thought the rain would slow down, it started back up and boy, oh boy, it did not take long for the "lakes" to appear and spill over onto our roadways, which caused some of the usual road closures in our area. However, the big thing comes when the water starts to scour out from under the roadways as you never know when you go through the standing water, whether the pavement has any support under it. Flooded in again! It wasn’t too bad until Sunday and we couldn’t get any of the vehicles out. The ducks are in heaven though. Our dogs have discovered that if they wade into the water under the trees, they can pick the mice out of the lower branches and have a snack. WEATHER--Can you say nippy? We started this week with a light layer of snow in West Valley and all the hills around me are quite white, so in spite of the warming trend we had with some rain showers that quickly melted the snow in my yard, it was still white in the hills. On Monday evening, it was a very brisk 24 degrees, so my water was dripping and I was thinking, "well, if it starts to snow, it will definitely stick--ugh!" Another weird week of weather. It looks like all the gloom and doom forecasts have just about missed us so far. It makes me wonder how much these folks get paid, with all the high tech equipment, and still can’t get it even close to right. STILL COLD--Wow, we've had some nippy nights in West Valley but we certainly love the clear, sunny days that have often accompanied them. Here we are, the final countdown to the end of 2010, and a new year dawning with hope for good health and good fortune coming with it. Navy Seaman Recruit Hannah R. DeBlois, a 2010 graduate of Naselle Grays-River High School, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Stephanie Wise, a former student of Naselle High School, will host a second AIDS benefit at the Naselle/Grays River High School Commons, starting at 6 p.m. on December 28. Wise, who is currently majoring in professional writing and political science at Baylor University in Waco, Tex., hosted the first concert in 2007, and another concert was organized for 2008 but canceled due to record snows. Sunday certainly brought an interesting storm to our area. The Grays River was over its banks and in the fields within a few minutes that afternoon. We drove to Rosburg at about 3 p.m. and in the time it took us to get back home the water was about four inches deep over our driveway coming in. At the year's final meeting of the Wahkiakum Historical Society, treasurer Julie Fritsch reported that the museum was approximately $28 in the red. "It was a good performance considering that we have not requested any support from the county for a couple of years, using only volunteer help and public donations," said society president Judy Brawn.
