Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night! So say we all as the blessed day comes. My prayer is for all travelers and loved ones to arrive safely with their families and have a loving, gentle day of giving and receiving. All the lights are up, I hope, and presents under the tree for the cat to play with. Animals are family, too. I hear snow might be coming. Soon we can settle and just be with friends and family to enjoy the day. December is full of activities as we prepare for the Big Day;...

  • Fairgrounds light show ends December 18

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 16, 2021

COLD/SNOW--As I begin this column, there are snowflakes falling and I must say, "I am not amused!" Actually KM Mountain at MP 22 is very white indeed so that may catch a few people off-guard, but hopefully everyone is prepared for these wintery conditions. Maybe by the time you read this, it will all be gone and we won't have to worry about it as we go into the weekend; fingers crossed! It seems when we have a million holiday things to do and places to go and events happening, that the weather opts to dump some horrible weather event upon us....

  • Wahkiakum leads SW WA Regional Robotics League

    Dec 16, 2021

Submitted by Ron Wright Photos by Jess Vik Last weekend the Wahkiakum Mecha-Mules ran into tougher competition than the first tournament. We finished 2-3-1 for our six matches. Overall in our Region (29 teams, SW Washington, from Olympia to Vancouver to Skamania) we are 9-1, since only the best 10 of 12 matches are counted. And we still lead in our region by over 100 competition points. The team circled up right after the tourney to discuss how to improve for the next tournament (Jan 15). Our bi...

We have nine days till Christmas. We can either use it for more shopping or we can recognize that the days we have left give us time to pause in gratitude for all this Holy Day means. Advent is a time to open our hearts to the mystery of God the Creator, God in Flesh and God the Comforter. May you all be blessed by the coming days with the message of light in the darkness. And may the coming of the shortest day of the year (winter equinox) remind us that light has indeed come with the increased...

  • Skamokawa News: Last weekend for Redmen Hall event

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 9, 2021

NIPPY--We woke up Sunday morning to temperatures below freezing so it was definitely a reminder that one needs an extra blanket on their bed and to put on some warmer apparel when they go outside! The rest of the week is looking mighty wet, so we can't forget our rubber boots, umbrellas and rain coats either! I just hope we don't have more slides or flooding at this busy time of year. While all this gray, wet and ugly weather persists, please be sure to turn on those headlights, as they may not help you see, but it sure helps others see you!...

  • Fire departments taking Santa for a ride this weekend

    Diana Zimmerman|Dec 9, 2021

It’s likely Santa has met a few firefighters in his day, considering how much time he spends going in and out of chimneys. Maybe that’s why he agreed to travel Wahkiakum highways and byways with crews from all the local fire departments this weekend on their second annual Wahkiakum County Fire and EMS Santa Run, as they parade around the community in their fire engines with lights a’glowing, and sirens a’blaring, all to collect donations for the STAR program, the Wahkiakum Animal Advocat...

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 2, 2021

WET ENOUGH?--This last weekend of November has definitely been a wet one, as once again we've had inches of rain per day and the creeks and streams have risen and our fields are more like lakes again. By the time you read this on Thursday, it's supposed to be dry for a couple of days so I certainly hope that's true as we've all got things to do and places to go in order to get ready for the holidays. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Dec. 2-8 are Menoka Martin, Maria Snow, Mackenizie Allen, Hank Bassi, Dennis Reed, Kitty Speranza,...

What a good holiday! Thanksgiving is an ideal time to stop and think about all we have to be grateful for. This week I’m thinking about the school and all the organizations that bring hope and help all to our “downriver” communities.” I am very grateful for the folks who send me news about what’s happening, and Lisa Nelson who sends updates from the Naselle/GRV schools. And I’d like to remind you that the Naselle Youth Camp is also busy educating young men who need stability in their lives...
