On July 23, a deputy responded to a request for a welfare check when someone noticed that a resident had not been picking up his mail. David Willis, 64, of 22 N. Welcome Slough Road was found deceased at home. He had been dead for some time, according to Sheriff Mark Howie. Wahkiakum County Sheriff Department officers arrested a Cathlamet man last week and charged him with theft of fishing gear, Sheriff Mark Howie reported July 24. Howie said during the previous week, a Cathlamet resident reported $650 in fishing poles and reels had been stolen from his boat after he saw the gear posted on Craigslist with the corresponding photos. Nordic American Voices, an oral history project, was launched by the Nordic Heritage Museum in 2009 with the mission to collect, preserve, and share the life histories of Nordic immigrants and their descendants in the Pacific Northwest. Since 2009 project volunteers have recorded the life stories of more than 350 Nordic-Americans in the region. The Tsuga Gallery, 70 Main St., in Cathlamet will celebrate its third anniversary on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Music will be provided by Fred Carter on the guitar. This will be a kick off event for the Bald Eagle Days Festival. On Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. they will host Kidzartworks, free, for ages four and up. The members of the Patriot’s Club at Wahkiakum High School have undertaken a bold endeavor. They are trying to raise $5000 for a motorized, retractable flag to descend like a projector screen from the ceiling of the gym. In conjunction with the VFW, they are organizing a raffle of a patriotic quilt made by the River City Strippers quilt group at Bald Eagle Days as well as patriotic table runners for a $20 donation. The 2014 Bald Eagle Fun Run on July 19 will benefit a record board for the Wahkiakum High School track and field program. The run will start at 9 a.m. on Cathlamet's Main Street and features events for walkers and runners. There will be 2-mile, 5k and 10k events with gender and age-based divisions. In the 2-mile and 5k events, there will be age divisions for children 12 years and under, 13-19 years, and 20 years and over for both males and females. Cemetery District #1 issued a reminder this week to the public concerning pets and decorations. No pets are allowed in the cemetery. The cemetery district will not be responsible for lost or stolen articles, including vases, markers, name bars, etc. A previous policy is still in effect concerning articles placed at the cemetery. Flowers and decorations must be removed 10 days after placement, and they ask that items not be placed around head stones and markers, as they impede the mowing process....

The grand reopening of Redmen Hall in Skamokawa is set for this Saturday, June 28. The hall had been closed recently for repairs to the foundation and a little painting.
