Navy Seaman Recruit Hannah R. DeBlois, a 2010 graduate of Naselle Grays-River High School, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Stephanie Wise, a former student of Naselle High School, will host a second AIDS benefit at the Naselle/Grays River High School Commons, starting at 6 p.m. on December 28. Wise, who is currently majoring in professional writing and political science at Baylor University in Waco, Tex., hosted the first concert in 2007, and another concert was organized for 2008 but canceled due to record snows. At the year's final meeting of the Wahkiakum Historical Society, treasurer Julie Fritsch reported that the museum was approximately $28 in the red. "It was a good performance considering that we have not requested any support from the county for a couple of years, using only volunteer help and public donations," said society president Judy Brawn. On October 2, Bob Pyle of Grays River will perform a reading and sign copies of his new book Mariposa Road: The First Butterfly Big Year at Redmen Hall from 1 to 3 p.m. Pyle spent all of 2008 searching the US for butterflies and personally tallied 480 species. On September 11, an exhibit of quilts by the River City Strippers - a Wahkiakum County based quilters group - will open at Redmen Hall. This will be a celebration of their 10th anniversary as a group, having started with 11 members in February 2000, and now grown to just over 40 quilters. They meet weekly in Cathlamet and have become well known for the Comfort Quilts they make and donate to seriously ill children and adults in local hospitals. They will be showing over 80 pieces of their work from quilts to bags, clothing and smaller items....
The annual Friends of Skamokawa Wine Tasting and Auction will take place on September 11, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Skamokawa Grange next to the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds.
