Local anti-LNG activists visit D.C.

With appointments to visit all three congressional delegates from Washington for our district and other federal agencies, local residents Carol Carver and George Exum are in the “other Washington” -- Washington D.C.

They are part of a delegation from the lower Columbia River region that includes Wahkiakum Friends of the River, Landowners for a Safe Community out of Cowlitz County, RiverVision from Clatsop County, and Columbia Riverkeeper from Portland. All of these groups comprise a noLNG coalition called Columbia River Clean Energy Coalition, an intervenor against the proposed Bradwood LNG terminal across from Puget Island and Cathlamet.

“Our first goal is to personally thank Congressman Baird for his support and recognition of the unrealistic idea of siting a LNG terminal 39 miles up the Columbia River” says Carver.

The group plans to ask Senators Murray and Cantwell to join Baird’s opposition to Bradwood and to join with other members of Congress who are beginning to scrutinize the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) philosophy of allowing free market forces to substitute for energy planning. According to Carver and Exum “the country may need eight or nine LNG terminals and 80 are currently proposed. Taxpayers are spending millions to support these speculative applications and extensive state and federal agency work that accompanies them.”

“ We plan to submit the results of our trip to area newspapers with articles and pictures on Friday or Saturday.”
