PUD pursuing dam on the Grays

The Wahkiakum County Public Utility District is continuing to investigate the viability of a hydroelectric project on the Grays River.

Staff from Wahkiakum and Snohomish County PUD's met earlier this month to discuss the issue.

Proponents say that if the project moves forward, it would have many benefits, including but not limited to, a stabilized spawning habitat, quicker recovery of capitalization costs through selling ‘green power’ at a premium, and protection for property by way of flood control.

In the long run, the project would save money and be a reliable source of energy for the whole county, said Wahkiakum PUD Manager Dave Tramblie in a news release this week.

The reliance on the Bonneville Power Administration could ease as utilities and Bonneville enter a new era of increased power costs.

Years ago, many PUD’s in central Washington went against conventional ideas and built hydro capacities. At the time, it was more expensive, but today these same PUD’s enjoy the lowest electricity rates in the nation.

The costs of a project are beyond what is considered prudent to the taxpayers of Wahkiakum County. Therefore, the PUD is considering a partnership with another entity in such a project.

According to a press release, the PUD is pleased by public interest in the project.

“One of the most important and valuable assets we could bring to the table is strong public support,” the release said.

In June, PUD customers will find a questionnaire to find how they feel about the project. If a questionnaire is not received, additional copies can be picked up at the main office in Cathlamet, or at the Rosburg Store.
