March 12, 2009

At the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce meeting on Tuesday, Wahkiakum School Superintendent Bob Garrett announced tickets for Saturday’s crab feed have been sold out; however, raffle tickets are still available. Tickets are one dollar apiece and can be purchased at the Cathlamet Pharmacy or the Cathlamet Chevron. Raffle ticket purchasers need not be present at the crab feed to win.

Chamber President Jennifer Hanigan introduced Web Designer Nick Henderson, who recently redesigned the website for Port District 1. Henderson, who grew up in Florence, Ore., has been in the area since May.

He will be designing a new website for the chamber. Henderson said there are several places where his work can be seen, including his own website, hendersongraphics.net, or cathlametmarina.org.

The farmers market will open for the 2009 season May 1 and will run through October 30, member Rob Stockhouse reported. He said the sponsors are always looking for more vendors, so interested parties should contact him.

On April 11, in cooperation with the Wahkiakum Food and Farm Network, the WSU Extension Office and Master Gardeners will present the Fifth Annual Food and Farm Summit.

It will be held in the River Street Meeting Room from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. This year's theme is “Grow Your Own Groceries; Workshops for Urban and Rural Growers.”

The summit will include keynote speaker, Suzanne Martinson, former This Day editor of The Daily News. There are also three other speakers scheduled for the event.

The cost is $20 per person or $35 per couple. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Stockhouse requests reservations be made in advance. Call 849-4145 for more information.

Mayor Dick Swart announced the town would be doing work on the Greenwood reservoir in mid-April. The tank will be taken offline to do some repair work. Swart believes customers won’t notice, but a request will be put out for voluntary water conservation. Customers will be notified of the exact date when it is set.

Employees of The Made in Wahkiakum Store have been working on redecorating and remodeling. They will reopen for business on March 18, store employee Jennifer Johnston said.

“Please come in because it is a whole new color scheme and things look pretty nice,” she said.
