Pirates stop Mule air attack 28-7

September 9, 2010

The Adna Pirates took on the Wahkiakum Mules and their new passing offense last Friday and left Cathlamet with a 28-7 victory.

The Mules, a traditionally run-oriented offensive team, ran the ball 12 times and passed for 38. They moved the ball at times on last year's Class 2B football champion but hurt themselves with penalties and turnovers.

The Pirates took the opening kick and mounted a touchdown drive, with Bubba Lara scoring from one yard out. The Mule defense stopped the conversion attempt, leaving the score 6-0 at 7:39 of the first quarter.

On their possession, the Mule offense turned over the ball, and Adna scored again, this time on a 20-yard pass from Konnor Moon to Lara, who also ran the conversion for a 14-0 lead at 2:27 of the first quarter.

The Mule offense got going in the second quarter, and the Mules cut the Pirates' lead to 14-7 when Lars Blix passed to Brandon Fudge for a five-yard play at 10:37. Blix kicked the conversion.

On the kickoff, the Mules recovered a Pirate fumble, but the Pirates intercepted Blix's pass at their own 20-yard line to kill the drive.

Lara scored on an eight-yard run at 4:25 of the second quarter. The Mules blocked the kick, and Adna led 20-7 at halftime.

The Mules took the ball into scoring position twice in the second half. A sack and a penalty killed one drive, and a fumble stopped another.

The Pirates scored after recovering a Mule fumble at the Mules' 15-yard line in the third quarter. The Mules made five fumbles and lost three.

Blix completed 19 of 38 passes for 281 yards and three interceptions. Leading receivers were Fudge, 4/70 yards, one touchdown; Wyatt Parker 8/74, and Zach Pierce, 2/45. Parker was the leading rusher with 24 yards on three runs.

The Mules had 12 first downs, nine by passing. They were penalized six times for 40 yards.

On defense, Blix led the Mules in tackles with 10. Joel Nicolazzi had 11, Kyle Bergquist 10, Zach Pierce nine, Fudge eight, Brett Chaput and Kohl Bergseng seven each, Parker and Tylor Russell six each, and Cameron Elliott and Ryan Helms five each. Parker intercepted a Pirate pass.

Adna gained 167 yards on the ground, 25 yards on three pass completions. They had 16 first downs, 14 by rushing. They fumbled twice and recovered both; they were penalized four times for 25 yards.

The Mules head to Morton on Friday to take on the Timberwolves, the combined team of Morton and White Pass high schools, who defeated Mossyrock 12-6 last Friday.
