Naselle Grays River Valley School District will hold an open house on Thursday, the 9th, at 6:30 p.m.

Comet Booster Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the 14th.

As a result of a very generous grant from the Templin Foundation, all incoming freshmen will be issued iPads as another learning tool to be used during school.

For those of you who knew Rose Elaine Johnson (Rosie), you remember what a private person she was, yet a jokester with all her friends and family. She was such a special lady that some of her friends decided to pay a special tribute to her on her birthday. On September 5, 16 of her closest friends met at the Naselle cemetery to celebrate her birthday and have a private "goodbye." On this beautiful sunny day, they enjoyed some of her favorite things: cake, flowers, memories and each one had a special story to tell. They all wore their lipstick because Rosie never went anywhere without it, shed a few tears, but mostly just celebrated a beautiful friend with much laughter.

Other news from the Westend:

On September 12 at 10 a.m.the congregation of the Grays River United Methodist Church will be dedicating their new doors, cabinets and organ during their worship service. They wish to acknowledge with special thanks the Larsons, the Dewitts, and other families for their generous donations to the Grays River Church over the years. There will be a potluck lunch following at 11 a.m. Everyone is welcome.

Johnson Park is ready to begin the big push forward once again, now that the legal issues have been resolved. This energy needs to be focused on what the community feels is still important to them, and what Wahkiakum County is willing to support where the people are concerned. I know we have had many meetings but this one is especially important. So far, with much adversity and no money, the advisory board has put together quite an assortment of services and fun things to do. Please join the Wahkiakum County Commissioners, the Johnson Park Advisory Board and others on Wednesday, September 15th at 7:00 p.m. in the cafeteria at Johnson Park. Check out what has been accomplished so far, and bring some new ideas.

Some activities ongoing are: The local pinochle card group meets on Mondays at noon for games and snacks. The Community Computer Center is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Also on Tuesdays and Thursdays Jack Braman teaches yoga classes beginning at 5:30 p.m. (this activity is on hiatus for a few weeks). Wednesday morning at 9:00 a.m. the local TOPS group meets in the exercise room. Also on Thursdays the Johnson Park Art Group meets in the cafeteria at 7 p.m.

The Grays River Valley Library is open six days a week for your convenience. Monday through Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 7: p.m. and on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thanks to lots of generous folks this library is free to anyone who wishes to get a card, it houses more than 7,000 books (including adult, teen and children), movies and audio books available for checkout. Lots of reference books and non fiction as well. Come on in and check it out. We also have shelves of paper back books in the hallway that are there for your pleasure. Just take one and bring one back in our free exchange.

The building is available for parties, meetings, or whatever. Contact Timo Virkkala for more information, or stop in and talk to Jim Monteith at the library.

Speaking of that, there will be a huge garage sale at Johnson Park this weekend. Lots and lots of goodies for sale. This is a private garage sale but a donation will be made to Johnson Park (this person has already donated much to the project of our community center). This time we will receive a regulation pool table with all the accessories, for use by the community at the park.

Don’t forget the meeting on Wednesday, the 15th at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria.

A couple of updates on some of our under the weather neighbors: Dale Dutcher is back to 100 percent. Cheryl says it’s great to have him be able to taste the food he’s eating, and she knows he’s well because he’s complaining again.

Last week I mentioned that Dan Anderson was off the critical list after some major surgeries. Well, he’s home and has been there since last Thursday. His grandson, Kevin Maki, says his appetite has returned and he is even going for seconds, which is a good thing as he lost some weight. He will be going in for therapy, but seems to be doing well. Good to have you home, Dan.

Dan’s wife, Bonnie, has had some health issues recently but seems to be coping well and had eye surgery last week. It’s time for some good health wishes for this family. Keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

The Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch that meets at the Rosburg Hall will enjoy meatloaf, whipped spuds with gravy, green beans, hot rolls and dessert. Lunch starts at noon.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays senior lunches are served at the same location by CAP. Menus for the coming week include: Thursday, the 9th: roast turkey, creamed kale, potatoes Romanoff and pumpkin bars; Tuesday, the 14th: cheese burgers with lettuce, tomato and pickle, berry lemonade and strawberry shortcake; Thursday, the 16th: chicken Romesco, orzo with spinach and tomato, chopped salad and mixed berry parfait.

Birthdays being celebrated this coming week: Justin Findley, Teresa Trimble, Amanda Dodson and Collette Beaulaurier on the 9th; Jason Gardner on the 10th; Joanna Fauver, Bill Wuorinen and Darlene Ammer on the 11th; Paula Rogers, Shawn Gilbert, Clair Stephan, Stephanie Noll, Cole Dorman and Gerrad Lemon on the 12th; Sean Welsh and Sheila Kilponen on the 13th; Paul Costello, Mariah Corbin, Joe Helvey, Jeff Linquist, Jason Ammer, Eugene Saari, Regan Wirkkala and Rachel Wirkkala on the 14th; Katriina Ervest, Marie Fauver and Jennifer Blanchard on the 15th. Happy Birthday to each of you.

Wishing you many more celebrations.
