Mules rough up Comets

April 14, 2011

The Mules took advantage of smart base running and numerous Comet errors as they sent the Comets packing with a 15-1 defeat last Friday in Cathlamet.

Defense was a chore for the Comets as they committed eight errors that led to many of the Mules’ runs.

However, the Mules did their part at the plate as well, tallying 12 hits and swiping a ridiculous 17 bases. The Mules also took advantage of five walks and three hit batters.

Brandon Fudge led the charge offensively, going three for four with a double, three runs batted in, three stolen bases and a run scored. Zach Pierce, Lars Blix, and Ben Miles each added two hits and combined to drive in five runners, score eight runs, and steal nine bases.

Steven Doumit, Travis Wegdahl, and Mason Mackey chipped in with one hit apiece, with Mackey accounting for two of the three hit batters out of the nine hole.

On the hill the Mules were just as dominant, limiting the Comets to just one unearned run on no hits (two walks, three hit batters) while recording nine of the 15 outs via strikeout.

Miles struck out three over the first two innings, retiring six in a row after drilling the leadoff batter of the game. Pierce pitched the next two innings, allowing the lone Naselle run but striking out four in the process. Blix finished off the game, casually striking out two of the three batters he faced.

Overall, it was a good performance from the team, especially considering it was their first game in quite some time.
