Event promotes reading skills and family fun

April 28, 2011

To help promote reading skills among parents and their children, an evening’s program entitled “Reading is Family Fun” has been organized by the Cathlamet Kiwanis, Cathlamet Public Library and the Wahkiakum School District.

Parents with children ranging in age from babies and toddlers just picking up a book, up to the 5th grade are invited to this joint parent-child event.

The “Reading is Family Fun” program will start at 5:30 p.m. and will last until 7:30 p.m. in the J.A. Wendt Elementary School, Multi-Purpose Room. Pizza and soft-drinks will be provided and there are numerous prizes to encourage attendance.

The guest speaker for the evening is Jacquelyn Keith who is the Early Learning Service Coordinator at the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District.

The goals of the program are to have fun, promote and encourage parent-child interactions and enjoyment of reading together, reinforce the fact that reading helps all students in their scholastic advancement and encourage and promote use of the Cathlamet Public Library.

To help with the logistics of providing adequate food for all, parents are asked to indicate their planned attendance by contacting Stephanie Leitz, J.A. Wendt Elementary School at sleitz@esd112.wednet.edu or 795-3261 or Connie Christopher at Cathlamet Library at connielib@centurytel.net or 795-3254.

A follow-up event is scheduled for September.
