What's Happening at the Fair? - May 12, 2011

I have heard that rainy weather doesn’t stop people from traveling to rummage sales; I know that this is a true fact now. Even though it was raining so hard it was knocking blossoms off flowers, at 10 a.m. cars started pulling up! They came to shop, visit and look over the projects going on at the Fairgrounds. We had neighbors, friends and travelers stop by and everyone left with sacks of treasures. Many were amazed at the variety of items that have been donated to support our Fair. Special thanks to Jerry Ledtke and Ursula Petralia for volunteering to help at the sale. Our next sale will be in June. If interested in an indoor space or truck tail-gate space while our next rummage sale is in progress, call the Fairgrounds office and leave a message.

Many thanks to Frances and Mike Phelan and Alternatives, a local business, for their generous donations to our Easter Bingo fund raising event! The Fairgrounds springtime work is finally getting done. We have a handyman! Ed Stevens was hired to get the Fairgrounds in shape. Ed is currently mowing acres of grass, pressure washing horse stalls and buildings, painting in the grange food booth, landscaping, cleaning up and repairing everything in sight. He is doing a great job and is enjoying the work he is tackling. Welcome to the fair staff Ed!

On June 4 the Fairgrounds will be the site of the Derby Dollars for Scholars and Rods & Reels Rod Run event! This is a special fund raising event established to generate funds for student scholarships. The Rods & Reels Car Show will be set up in the Fairgrounds park and the Dollars for Scholars Sturgeon Derby & Barbecue is located on the Fairgrounds midway area. The day begins with a fishing derby for the biggest sturgeon caught before the final weigh-in time at 3:30 p.m. The Fairgrounds park will be completely filled with beautiful cars, be sure to place a vote for your favorite in the people’s choice award box! A delicious dinner, which includes barbeque chicken and salmon is served from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. At 4:30 p.m. Derby prizes are awarded and multiple raffle drawings begin. There is a free fishing pond for kids 12 and under, stocked with big trout and fishing poles will be provided for the kids to use. “Kids” the pond opens at 9 a.m. and “Dad” be sure to bring your camera! Lively music will be performed by the Naselle High School Marimba Band and is scheduled to play from noon – 2 p.m. All proceeds benefit scholarship programs at Wahkiakum and Naselle/Grays River Valley High Schools. This event is sponsored by Wahkiakum Dollars for Scholars Foundation & Naselle-Grays River Valley Education Association.

If you need to gain access to the Fairgrounds contact Fair Manager Becky Ledtke at 560-0371 or you can call the Fairgrounds Office at 1-360-795-3480 and leave a message.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting will start at 7 p.m. on June 8, in the T-building at the Fairgrounds in Skamokawa. The public is always welcome to attend.
