University of Washington students to gather community input

This coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 3-5, graduate students from the University of Washington (UW) will be in Cathlamet to help gather community input on what matters most and what people want to see for the future of this area. This is a chance to speak to what makes this place what it is and what the community itself wants to carry forward.

The public is invited to stop by and share their thoughts at one of several public sessions. On Friday, April 3, sessions will be held at the River Street Meeting Room (45 River Street) from 10:30 a.m. to noon; at Wahkiakum High School (500 S. 3rd St.) from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., and at The Spar (83 Main St.) from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Dinner will not be provided. A final session will be held Saturday, April 4, at Puget Island Gardens (520 WA-409) from 12:30 to 2 p.m.

Students may be out and about Friday around mid-day and Saturday morning. Feel free to say hello and start a conversation, as some of the best input happens that way. This project will continue through spring 2026. WHEELhouse, the Town of Cathlamet, and the University of Washington Departments of Landscape Architecture and Scandinavian Studies are working together to support heritage-based preservation and tourism, outdoor recreation, and overall community and environmental health through planning and design. The groups are grateful to the many local partners, organizations, and businesses helping make this effort possible.

All voices in the community matter in this process. If unable to attend a session, there will be additional ways for those who wish to participate to share their thoughts. Information will be posted at wahkiakum.org and at Town Hall.

The UW students will document community input and use it to create drawings, maps, models, and diagrams that reflect local ideas. They will then return to share that work and gather feedback at a community event on Friday, June 5. For more information, visit wahkiakum.org or stop by the Town of Cathlamet office at 100 Main St.
