Principal's Round table tackles online safety

January 26, 2012

To The Eagle:

I would like to encourage parents, teachers and community members to attend the Principal's Round Table tonight (Thursday) at 6 p.m. in room 101 of the John C. Thomas Middle School. We will be discussing online safety, cyberbullying and sexting.

With 20 percent of youth having sent or posted nude or semi-nude photos of themselves, we are definitely in need of some education on the consequences of this epidemic. The emotional and legal consequences both come with huge impact on one's life.

With the increase in technology, we are finding more and more ways for today's youth to become victims of predators. The internet can be a place where kids aren't aware of the dangerous situation. It is our job as adults to educate, supervise and protect our children. The Principal's Round Table can educate you on ways to do this.

Researchers calculated that on average, 24 people are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking every minute. In one year that translates to more than 12 million women, men and children.

Youth prevention programs can help to reduce these staggering numbers. I have been working within the school district to bring awareness to many issues. I have been working with the middle school students on bullying, sexual harassment, sexting and healthy relationships. I will be working in the elementary school on bullying and sexual abuse prevention.

If you or someone you know has been the victim of sexual assault or domestic violence, or have questions about our free and confidential services, please feel free to call our office at 360-795-6400 or 866-795-9381.

I hope to see you at the Principal's Round Table.
