Lady Mules hammer Comettes, split with Vikes

March 29, 2012

Last Thursday, the Wahkiakum Lady Mules overcame Naselle’s four run first inning to 10-run their KM counterparts in a 14-4 six-inning victory at Cathlamet.

Brieanna Olsen picked up the victory for the Lady Mules, settling down after issuing three walks and a pair of singles in the first inning to allow only two hits over the next five innings.

One of those two hits was a one-out double in the third inning, but she was quickly erased when the next batter lined out to second baseman Morgan Elliott, who quickly got the ball to shortstop Tori Wegdahl for an inning-ending double play.

Olsen finished with six strikeouts, three walks, and four hits allowed. Elliott (two singles, three RBIs, run scored), Sammi Boyce (single, double, RBI, two runs scored), and Haylee Budd (single, triple, two RBIs, two runs scored, two stolen bases) led the Lady Mules offensively.

On Saturday, the Lady Mules hit the road for the first time this year to travel to Mossyrock for a doubleheader. Olsen went the distance on the mound in the opener, recording three strikeouts and picking up the win as the Lady Mules topped the Lady Vikings 9-8.

Boyce carried a big stick in the opener, smacking a pair of four-baggers to lead the way, driving in three runs in the process. Budd went 3 for 4 with a double and a pair of singles, three stolen bases and three runs scored. Jem Dyer added an RBI triple, a double, and a run scored for the Lady Mules. Coach Cindy Fudge praised Marissa Longtain’s stellar defensive effort at third base.

The nightcap didn’t go as well for the Lady Mules as they dropped game two 14-6 to the Lady Vikes.

Baylee Olsen started on the hill and threw the first three innings before being relieved by her older sister Brieanna for the final four frames. Boyce, Budd, Elliott, and Wegdahl each went 2 for 4 at the plate to lead the Lady Mules, including a fifth-inning two-run homer by Wegdahl.

The Lady Mules hosted the Naselle Comettes again this past Tuesday, trailing by one run after four innings before the game was called in the top of the fifth inning on account of rain.
