March 21, 2013

The Wahkiakum Mule softball team defeated Naselle and lost a Central League match to Onalaska in action this past week.

On March 13, the Mules outscored the visiting Naselle Comettes 13-5.

Pitcher Tori Wegdahl threw a complete game, striking out 12 batters and allowing only two hits. On offense, she hit a triple.

Catcher Sam Boyce “did a great job defensively as well as offensively. She was a vacuum behind the plate,” said Coach Cindy Fudge. She hit a home run, two triples and a single.

Morgan Elliott had two RBI’s and a single. Jem Dyer hit a double. Haylee Budd was two for three with a triple, double and three RBIs. Marissa Longtain went two for four at bat.

“I’m really proud of how hard the team is working," Fudge said. “They are very unselfish and cheer for one another. Our theme this year is a quote from John Wooden, ‘Teamwork begins where selfishness ends.’ And these girls, both teams are really working together to make that quote a reality.”

The Mules travelled to Onalaska on Friday to play a double header. They lost the first game 14-2. Wegdahl struck out two. Sam Boyce “hit a monster homerun that actually went into the boys’ field,” said Coach Cindy Fudge. “Haylee Budd played great defense and added two hits…and the only RBI.”

The second game went better than the first, ultimately going downhill in the fifth and turning into a Mule loss.

Dallas Gott made a “valiant effort on the mound," Fudge commented. "I was really proud of how hard she worked on the mound for us.

“Boyce did a tremendous job behind the plate as well as offensively. Budd again a standout defensively. Marissa Washington had some great catches in the field for us. Wegdahl did a great job on defense.”

Madison LaBerge hit a single, bringing in two runs. Marissa Longtain hit a double, bringing in two more runs. Rachel Patching and Marissa Washington also added great hits, Fudge said.

The Mule junior varsity plays at Toledo today (Thursday). On Friday, Mossyrock comes to Cathlamet for a 3 p.m. doubleheader; the games were rescheduled from Saturday. On Monday, the JV's play at Clatskanie, and on March 28, the Mules entertain Adna in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
