Late Tuesday afternoon, a baker’s dozen gathered at the Marina to celebrate Drop Anchor Brewery’s ground breaking ceremony.

Blue skies and a warm sun promised good weather for the contractor, even if the local news did not.

“It should take us two and a half months to complete the project, said Bill Hahn, Contractor for Better Home Construction in Longview. “Weather permitting, of course.”

Local contractors George and James Trott staked out the site and were expected to begin moving dirt on Wednesday.

Drop Anchor’s investors were in high spirits. Their Broken Hose Pale Ale was poured into empty glasses all around and Steve Sharp toasted the brewery and Cathlamet.

“I’m just excited to be part of this. I think it holds good things for the community,” said dentist and investor Dr. Doug Martin.

Richard Erickson said the brewery and tasting room will be just that. They have no no desire to compete with local restaurants. They hope to be brewing an IPA, an Irish ale, a porter, hefeweizen, seasonals and opening their doors at the beginning of the new year.

“It really depends on permits and the weather,” Erickson said. “It’s a nice project for the port. In 10 years, the building will be paid off and they will own it, a big return on their investment.”

“I think it’s an exciting day for Cathlamet and a welcome addition,” echoed celebrant Barry Aiton, who was enjoying the beer, the company and the sunshine.
