Mule netters beat Winlock, begin district play

The Wahkiakum Mule volleyball team finished its regular season with a win last Wednesday and began district tournament play over the weekend. On Saturday, they faced two teams and came home with a win and a loss. The loss settled them into the loser out bracket.

In the last game of the regular season, the Lady Mules beat Winlock in three sets last Wednesday, 25-7, 25-10, and 25-9.

Coach Kayli Hurley praised Kennedi LaBerge and Makenzie Anderson who had seven kills each. She also singled out Macie Elliott, who had five kills and Savannah Burdick, who was 100 percent from the service line.

“We ended regular season play at 6-3 in league and 11-3 overall,” Hurley said.

On Saturday, the team traveled all the way to Tacoma to play Ocosta in the first round of district games. They beat the Wildcats easily in three sets, 25-18, 25-19 and 25-21.

Anderson had 12 kills, M. Elliott had six kills, and Grace Peacock had seven kills.

“Tyra Elliott and Savannah Burdick were awesome with serve receive,” Hurley said.

The team faced Pacific League champion Life Christian later that afternoon and lost in three sets, 16-25, 17-25, and 24-26.

According to Hurley, LaBerge had seven kills and was great on defense and serve receive. She also praised Sydney Hansen who had two kills, and Peyton Souvenir, who had eight kills and three assists.

The Lady Mules traveled to Willapa Valley to continue district play on Wednesday. They began with a game against Northwest Christian at 4 p.m. If they won, they faced the winner of the Raymond-Friday Harbor game at 7 p.m.
