Volunteer says local officials are inclusive

January 14, 2016

To The Eagle:

My views, opinions or motives have never been questioned, vetted nor suspected regarding my interests in volunteering with local community groups. I have asked to participate on some working committees and have been welcomed. I am always impressed with the faithfulness and commitment of leaders to be inclusive and dedicated to their respective causes.

I know information is disseminated a variety of ways, particularly at the county level via the Wahkiakum County website and in The Eagle.

With just a call to most community service organizations, your name can be added to their email lists. Notices of meetings, public hearings--whatever your interests--are rarely lost unless, as is often my case, I simply haven't read the paper!

Happily, this is Cathlamet, WA! We do not have to wade through the New York Times, the New Orleans Times-Picayune or Seattle Times to find information related to issues we care about. If you have a concern, want to support a cause, participate in your community, read the paper, call a county office or the Chamber of Commerce. Let someone know you want to participate, then do.

You may not like the outcome of your efforts, but you will find a consciously democratic structure built on openness and fairness to deliberate your concerns within, or, you may like the outcome of your work and that of your committee.

I send thanks to the community members, volunteers, elected officials and professionals, present and future, who actively support and attempt to do what is right for beautiful Wahkiakum County.

Sue Garn
