Cleaning out and filling seed trays.

Here's a quick look at some of the activities that our CTE and FFA programs have participated in over the month of February:

-- Presentation of the farm forest plan to the school board: Students in Mr. Hurley's Natural Resources class spent many weeks coming up with a plan to make the farm forest more productive. After they came up with this plan, a volunteer group of a few students presented what their group had come up with to the school board.

-- Crab and Oyster feed: FFA students were asked to help serve oysters and crabs at the annual event held at the Norse Hall. The high school FFA students played a major role in setting up, service during the dinner, and finally help with taking everything down and cleaning up after the dinners. They earned community service hours from this event along with a lunch that was provided from tips from the event.

-- Farm forest tree planting: Students went up to the farm forest and planted 4,800 douglas fir trees in the cutting from last spring. This was part of the management plan that was thought of by Mr. Hurley's students. The plot was planted with rows of Douglas Fir seedlings with 10 by 10 spacing throughout to total 431 trees per acre.

-- Seed tray preparation: Students in Mr. Hurley's Ag. Science class helped clean out and put new dirt in seed trays for the class to grow plants in the green house.

-- LCC welding competition: FFA members Jordan Friend, Winchester Greenup, and Orion Daughtry competed in a welding competition held at LCC. The students ended up placing 5th out of 13 teams. This was their first time competing at this competition and Mr. Hurley was pleased with their performance. The competition consisted of a written exam, cutting out a wrench, and a vertical weld around a 4x4 piece of angle iron.
