It’s time for the annual Downriver Challenge, the all day wrestling meet hosted by the Wahkiakum High School wrestling team and family.

According to Frankie Mendez, the wrestling coach for Wahkiakum High School, 13 teams from southwest Washington and Oregon are expected to attend, including Mark Morris, R.A. Long, Warrenton, Knappa, Clatskanie, Rainier, Ocosta, Willapa Harbor, Adna, Life Christian and White Salmon.

The event is mostly for the boys, but a few girls are expected and will be accommodated.

“We’ll get them matches,” Mendez said.

Five Mules are currently eligible to wrestle this weekend including Cayden Mendez, Braxton Johns, Jamil Dimaano, Jenna Mellis, and Daniel Dennison.

“We get a lot of help from the wrestling family,” Mendez said. “It would be tough to put on this tournament without their help.”

They will feed coaches, bus drivers, and volunteers and concessions will be available for wrestlers.

The event starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday and is expected to go on until 7 p.m.
