Loss knocks Mules out of tourney

The Wahkiakum Mules baseball team ended their season in the first round of the State 2B tournament after losing 5-3 to Friday Harbor in Yelm on Saturday.

“We had to fight a lot of adversity this year with injuries,” Coach Marc Niemeyer said. “Making it to state was a hard fought journey.

"I had the honor and privilege to coach seniors Luke (Brown) and James (Anderson) for the past five seasons. They made it to state four years in a row and were huge contributors to putting Mule baseball back on the map as a powerhouse program. Their leadership, dedication, and passion for the game will be greatly missed.”

“Seniors Evan (Quigley) and Quentin (Nelson) were a tremendous surprise and a ton of fun to coach this year as well,” Niemeyer continued.

“I love all these young men on the baseball team as if they were my own sons. We have the best parents and community support hands down and we thank you for that. We have a lot of returners and will need to build our pitching staff in the off season to return to the big stage. There is no question that we will swing the sticks next year! We plan on being back at state again, so until 2020.”
