Grain ship runs aground

The Gorgoypikoos, a bulk carrier, ran aground on Miller Sands Bar near Altoona on Sunday due to a steering control malfunction, according to a report from the U.S. Coast Guard.

The 738 foot vessel was reported to be carrying grain and 318,000 gallons of fuel oil and had been traveling at 10 knots when it ran “soft” aground.

A federal investigator was dispatched by the Coast Guard. There were no injuries reported by the crew of 21, and there appeared to be no pollution.

Columbia River Pilots and Columbia River Bar Pilots monitored traffic and issued some restrictions while the stern of the vessel partially obstructed the channel.

Three tugboats arrived to assist, but the Gorgoypikoos was able to pull itself off the bar at high tide during the early morning hours on Monday and head to its intended destination in Longview.
