The Wahkiakum Mules pulled away in the second half to claim a 34-14 victory over the Mossyrock Vikings last Friday.

The Vikings scored first on a 30-yard run in the first quarter and took an 8-0 lead. The Mules responded with a second quarter touchdown in the second quarter. Quarterback Kaden Anderson crossed the goalline on an 11-yard run, and the first half ended with the Vikings leading 8-7.

The second half got off to a rocky start for the host Vikings.

"Mossyrock asked for a 10-minute long halftime break," Mule Coach Eric Hansen said. "We said okay, and we were on the field and ready to go when it was over. But Mossy wasn't there."

The Vikings were late, and officials charged them with a 15-yard penalty. The Vikings then fumbled away the Mules' kickoff, giving the Mules good field position. Braxton Johns scored on a seven yard run, and the Mules led 14-8.

Mossyrock tied the game on a short run midway through the quarter. The Mules took a 21-14 lead with nine seconds left on a 30-yard pass play from Anderson to KC Beery.

The Mules put the game away in the fourth quarter. Jake Leitz pulled in a pass from Anderson and scored on a 44-yard play early in the quarter, and Johns broke free for a 55-yard touchdown run with just over four minutes left for the 34-14 final score.

The Mules gained 256 yards on the ground and 148 in the air. The Vikings had 194 yards rushing and nine yards passing.

Johns had 113 yards on 12 carries; Leitz 83 yards, and Anderson 31. Anderson completed six of 11 passes for two touchdowns and one interception. Beery and Leitz each caught two passes; Chase Heagy and Zach Brandon each caught one.

Leading the Mule defense were Leitz with 18 tackles, Anderson with 11, Zayne Meneou nine, Eli Moon eight, Johns seven, and Beery and Heagy six each.

The Mules will look for their second win of the season this Friday when the Toutle Lake Ducks come to Cathlamet for the Wahkiakum High School homecoming football game. Game time is 7 p.m.
