November 14, 2019

The Wahkiakum Mules are in Yakima today (Thursday) to begin play in the two day State 2B volleyball tournament after qualifying at district on Saturday.

After losing to Kalama in three sets in the district semifinals last Wednesday, the Lady Mules rebounded in the loser’s bracket on Saturday, beating Toledo 3-0 and ultimately losing to Toutle Lake in four sets. It was enough to earn a fourth place finish and a spot at the state tournament.

The scores for Wednesday’s loss to Kalama were 25-17, 25-17, and 25-11.

“Courtney Carlson, Shantelle Shervey, Jordyn Watson, and Solana Stanley played stellar defense against Kalama’s big weapons for the most part,” Coach Kayli Hurley said. “Jansi Merz and Nai’a Freeman got some great touches at the net. Merz was the kill leader for the night.”

On Saturday versus Toledo, the Lady Mules won 25-7, 25-19, and 25-13. They lost to Toutle Lake 18-25, 25-22, 14-25, and 14-25.

Saturday’s stat totals included nine aces, two kills, nine digs and 34 assists for setter M.J. Neves. Libero Solana Stanley was 100 percent from the service line and had 23 digs. Merz had 18 kills and seven blocks. Rebekah Neves had 10 kills. Watson had eight kills and 15 digs. Amaya Jones had three kills and 11 digs. Megan Leitz had two kills and many touched blocks. Shervey finished with eight digs and “consistent serve receive.”

The team will face Liberty (Spangle) at 1:30 p.m. in the first round of state play on Thursday. Win or lose, they will play again at 8:30 p.m. the same day.
