Local veterans salute the flag at Greenwood Cemetery during the Memorial Day ceremony on Monday.

Post 5297 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and other members of the community took some time to remember the men and women who lost their lives in service to their country on Monday for Memorial Day.

"We owe them a debt that can never be repaid," Post Commander Bill Tawater said. "It is our responsibility to recognize their service, honor their devotion to duty, and mirror their devotion by doing whatever it takes to ensure their sacrifices and hopes will forever be remembered."

Eric Hansen's eighth grade students went to Greenwood Cemetery on Thursday, as they do every year, to help volunteers from VFW Post 5297 place flags at the graves of local veterans and to learn why we take time to honor them on Memorial Day.
