TOASTY--If you wanted the heat to show up, you certainly got your wish for Mother’s Day weekend as most areas around our parts were sporting temperatures in either the upper 80s or low 90s and that was plenty hot for me! I believe our temperature gauge said 94 and to me, that’s just miserable and it means “hiding indoors in the AC” so it might as well be raining! Anyway, for all you “like it hot” folks, I hope you enjoyed it and didn’t get too sunburned!

Those celebrating anniversaries this week are Mr. and Mrs. Shawn Deal, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Faubion, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Danker and Mr. and Mrs. John Fitzpatrick. May you all have enjoyable celebrations this coming week!

SALMON DINNER--If you like salmon, then you should be heading to the Norse Hall this Saturday, May 20 from 4:30 until 7:30 p.m., and enjoy a nice dinner for $20 per plate. The Norse Hall is located at 444 SR 409 on Puget Island and is the home of the Sons of Norway lodge.

Someone mistakenly thought this was an all you can eat salmon buffet, but at no time was that ever mentioned, so please note that you may feast on a salmon dinner on Saturday but that is not to say that means all you can eat!

BUSY DAY--Earlier in the day on May 20, you will be mindful to watch for those participating on the Great White Tail Run, with sign-ups at Vista Park and the run around Steamboat Slough and Julia Butler Hansen refuge. Good luck to all those participating and I hope it’s not too hot for you that day.

Also happening that day is the fairgrounds clean up day, so if you can help spruce up our county fairgrounds that day, the crew will definitely appreciate more hands to help out. This begins at 10 a.m.

THIS SUNDAY--It’s time for the “May Acoustic Song Circle” at the Skamokawa Grange Hall so if you’re interested, head down here this Sunday, May 21 and take part; the fun begins at 3 p.m. Wahkiakum Vibes has a Facebook page if you’d like to check them out. They are more than happy to have you join in as they play a variety of music and if you don’t play an instrument, you can come down and tap your toes and listen while you enjoy a cup of coffee! SAD NEWS--We were sorry to hear about the passing of a couple of WA-KI-HI alumni just recently, as Terry Thornton of the Class of 1968 passed away on May 5. There will be a Celebration of Life gathering on June 25 at Hammerlee Park in West Linn, Ore., from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. We send our sympathies to his family.

I also got a call from Carol Danker who told me about the passing of her brother, Jim Hattrick on May 5 as well. Jim was a good looking guy from the Class of 1965, who had the distinction of becoming the first ever member of the WHS Cheerleading A Squad, with the other members being Chris Martin, Enid Martin, Vicki Neely and Jennifer Neilson. He was a great addition to the team, who was active in Camera Club, W Club, Pepe Club, Interclass Gamers and on the Annual Staff as well. Our sincere condolences to Carol and all the members of his family. A gathering in his memory has yet to be determined.

BERRY SALES--Once again, the Wahkiakum Lions Club will have their Frozen Berry Sale so if you’re interested in strawberries, raspberries, blackberries or blueberries, now is the time to stock up for those desserts you’ll want to enjoy later on! These are locally grown, quick frozen and you will get 6-40 oz. pouches per 15 lb. case. You will need to get your order in by June 12 and they will have to be picked up on June 17 at 10 a.m., at either the Wahkiakum High School parking lot, Skamokawa Grange Hall parking lot or the Rosburg Store Parking lot. All orders must be paid in advance, so check out the stores in the area as many have the forms there, as they have all the prices and info on where to mail your check. Need more info? VOLUNTEERS NEEDED--While it may seem early, the months are flying by and our winter weather and winter needs will be here before we know it. So, if you could help out the folks operating the “Emergency Warming Center” here in Wahkiakum County, it would certainly be appreciated. It’s always good to be prepared for inclement weather so if you’d like to be a volunteer when this need comes up, please contact Holly at 360-703-7732. If you find that someone is in distress during this time and could really use some help, contact the Sheriff's office at their non-emergency number of 360-795-3242 and they will contact this volunteer group and get that person the help they need.

NEXT FRIDAY--I have heard several people ask about the Farmers Market in Cathlamet and here’s a reminder that it will open next Friday, May 26 and last until Sept. 1. It is held each Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. This market is held at the Elochoman Slough Marina at 500 2nd Street; you can’t miss it!

The Farmers Market in Skamokawa at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds begins next month, June 20.

CAR SHOW--If you’d like to pre-register your car for the ‘Cruzin to the Fair' car show, which includes some perks, then you will need to get that taken care of by May 26. The car show takes place on June 3. More info? Call 360-795-3480.

LOTS OF CELEBRATIONS--I saw lots of family gatherings and gifts and flowers and other good things that various Moms posted on Facebook as they showcased some of their Mother’s Day doings. It was great to see so many enjoying such a great time. I know there are many of us who no longer have our Moms with us, so it’s always kind of a melancholy day, but we sure were thinking of them, while we enjoyed being treated by our own kids on that special day.

I know my gifts, phone calls and a weekend outing were certainly appreciated so thank-you kids, and hubby too!

Also kudos to Rene W. and friends for making some gals a bit happier with a surprise bouquet made by Nicole Emery on Mother’s Day; always nice to get an unexpected gift!

REUNION REMINDERS--The WHS Class of 1963 will hold their 60th reunion on July 15 at 5 p.m., at the conference room behind the Skamokawa General Store/Resort so be sure to contact Julie McKagan at 360-459-8810 or Gary Emery with questions.

Also, the WHS Class of 1967 will meet at Dale's near the Marina on July 15 shortly after the Bald Eagle Day parade; meet at 1:30 and eat at 2 or so. It’s all pretty laid back so just come on down like before and gab a spell. Call me for more info.
