Sheriff's Report, August 24, 2023

Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including:

August 14 — 2:55 a.m. An Elochoman Valley resident reported an ongoing problem with a neighbor’s dogs barking though the night. 7:57 a.m. A caller reported that the ferry was down. At 8:27 a.m., it was back in service. 9:51 a.m. A deputy served a Rosedale resident with an eviction notice. 12:40 p.m. A tree was down on SR 4 and blocking the westbound lane. State patrol was notified. 12:50 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided an East Valley resident who was having difficulty breathing. Lifeflight was on standby and then canceled. 2:13 p.m. A caller reported ongoing domestic problems. A deputy spoke to her about available protection orders and said he would check in with her. 2:39 p.m. A caller asked for assistance after getting locked out of a vehicle. 2:55 p.m. A caller said a man was very angry when he left the Treasurer’s Office and made obscene gestures toward the staff. 7:11 p.m. A caller said the gate at the county shop was malfunctioning and setting off an alarm. The county road supervisor was contacted. 7:46 p.m. A caller said a concrete block dropped out of a truck and onto the edge of SR 4 near Oneida Road. 9:07 p.m. A driver struck a deer on SR 4 in the Little Cape Horn area. A tow truck was called. 9:26 p.m. A caller reported an erratic driver heading west on SR 4. 9:29 p.m. A Puget Island resident heard a disturbance in the North Welcome Slough area. Deputies responded and found a man who was having a mental health crisis. The man was able to regain his composure.

August 15 — 2:53 a.m. A man became concerned when he didn’t hear from his wife for several hours. He said she was last seen at the fairgrounds. At 3:16 a.m., he called back to say that she was headed home. 3:23 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a Cathlamet resident with high blood pressure. Lifeflight was on standby and then told to stand down. 12:19 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a person in Rosedale who was having a seizure. 2:50 p.m. A caller said the county shop gate was not working and would be left in the open position overnight. 3:12 p.m. A person in the Elochoman Valley flagged down a deputy. She was warm to the touch and was complaining of nausea and abdominal pain. She nearly fainted. The Cathlamet ambulance responded. 4:16 p.m. A man said he and a two year old child were abandoned by his now ex-girlfriend at Vista Park. He said his car was in Portland and asked for assistance getting home. At 4:31 p.m., a deputy reported seeing a man fitting his description walking on SR 4. 5:28 p.m. A caller was concerned about cattle in a Puget Island field that were in the heat without shelter or shade. 5:36 p.m. A welfare check was requested for an ailing couple in a home on Risk Road. A deputy responded and a person in the home admitted they both had fevers but said they did not need assistance. 8:20 p.m. A caller said a woman came to her Elochoman Valley home claiming that her phone was located at that address according to an app. The caller said it felt like the woman was trying to enter her home. She said the woman left but the interaction made her feel uncomfortable. 8:42 p.m. An alarm was activated at the Elochoman Slough Marina. A responsible party was contacted. 9:47 p.m. A caller reported a large, illegal controlled burn at a Middle Valley property. The caller said she told the people about the burn ban, but they told her it was private property and that they had a pit. The Cathlamet Fire Department and a deputy were informed.

August 16 — 6:02 a.m. A caller said that two people were passed out in a vehicle parked at an address on Boege Road. A deputy responded and the driver moved the vehicle to a public space. 8:39 a.m. A caller said there were two people in a vehicle parked at a Rosedale business. He was concerned about a possible overdose. A deputy responded and said that both parties were moving around and no aid was needed. 10:14 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a clinic patient complaining of severe stomach pain. 1:17 p.m. A caller said she saw someone on camera appearing to take a $5 bag of ice from their Deep River business. A deputy responded and the individual agreed to stop by and pay for the ice. 6:13 p.m. A Beaver Creek resident said their housekeeper returned a credit card when she found it, but there were three unauthorized charges on it. She believed the person may have used it without permission. 7:57 p.m. An alarm was activated at the county shop. The county road supervisor was notified. 9:29 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a man at the ferry landing who may have overdosed. A deputy reported that Narcan was administered twice and the man was barely breathing. At 9:50 p.m., the man refused transport to the hospital. 9:49 p.m. A Middle Valley resident reported that there was an uncontrolled burn for the last three nights.

August 17 — 9:02 a.m. A Rosedale resident asked for assistance in removing a family member who was causing trouble from the home. A deputy spoke to the caller about a no contact order. 1:07 p.m. An Elochoman Valley resident said that around 4 p.m. the day before a person was seen walking across his property. 4:21 p.m. A Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife employee said someone fired shots at them while they were working along the Elochoman River that morning. 4:36 p.m. The sheriff’s department received a referral from Adult Protective Services for a person on Beaver Creek. 4:39 p.m. A caller reported that there were cows in a Skamokawa roadway. The owner was notified. 4:41 p.m. The sheriff’s department received a referral from Adult Protective Services for a person in Cathlamet. 5:57 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a person at the fairgrounds who was feeling weak.

August 18 — 6:27 a.m. A Cathlamet resident reported seeing a strange man walking past her house with his pants down. 9:15 a.m. A Puget Island resident reported that two security cameras were stolen. 10:51 a.m. The Grays River ambulance and the Grays River Fire Department aided a Rosburg resident who was injured after falling through a roof. 11:11 a.m. A man who was seen earlier in Cathlamet with his pants down was seen again on Steamboat Slough Road. 12:24 p.m. A caller reported that a dog was left in a vehicle in Skamokawa with the windows open about two inches. Deputies responded and the owner moved the car to a shady spot. 3:13 p.m. State patrol and a deputy stopped a subject on SR 4 in the Cathlamet area. 5:59 p.m. An east county resident said a man came to her door asking for gas money. When she said no, he said he would ask the neighbor. She told him they weren’t home and then watched him walk into a tree covered area between the two houses and disappear. She asked if law enforcement would make sure he was actually gone. 7:50 p.m. A caller said someone was taking pictures of himself and his vehicle and was accusing the caller of doing something. He said the man was now asking to speak to law enforcement. 9:06 p.m. An East Valley resident said cows belonging to someone else destroyed his hay field. The owner was contacted. 9:42 p.m. A caller reported that an erratic driver almost hit other drivers and nearly went off the road. 10:54 p.m. A man who was camping at Vista Park got his vehicle stuck in the sand dunes after being told to stay out of the sand dunes. Deputies and state patrol responded. The man was trespassed.

August 19 — 7:51 a.m. A caller requested a welfare check on an individual who had been in a ditch along Welcome Slough Road for the last two to three hours. The person did not respond when the caller spoke to her. At 8:09 a.m., the caller said the person was now walking down South Welcome Slough Road. 5:37 p.m. A person at an Elochoman Valley residence was taken into custody. 6:49 p.m. A motorcycle accident was reported at the intersection of SR 4 and Jacobson Road. A deputy, the District 4 Fire Department, and the Cathlamet ambulance responded. The individual refused transport to the hospital. 7:17 p.m. A caller said a bear was seen at the fairground campground area the last couple nights. An officer for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife responded. 7:20 p.m. A Skamokawa resident reported that someone’s cows were on his property. The owner was contacted and en route. The resident said it was the second time the cattle were on his property and that if it happened again, he would like to speak to a deputy. 8:45 p.m. A caller said someone struck a deer on Elochoman Valley Road. She said the deer was alive and in her yard.

August 20 — 6:45 a.m. An alarm was activated at a Puget Island home. Dispatch was able to contact the owner. It was a false alarm. 11:43 a.m. A caller was concerned about possible elder abuse in a Rosedale home. 12:18 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a Puget Island resident with mental health issues. 12:33 p.m. A caller reported an erratic driver heading west on SR 4. 12:49 p.m. A person was seen dumping his trash at the recycling center at the high school in Cathlamet. The vehicle was later seen at the Dollar General and then at a home in Cathlamet. 1:28 p.m. A Skamokawa resident said his neighbor’s cattle were coming on to his property every day. He said that he asked his neighbor to fix the fence, but it was still broken. 3:42 p.m. An Elochoman Valley resident said her son was out of control. She later said he had calmed down some and agreed to stay home. 5:06 p.m. A caller said she lost sight of a friend after the friend flipped a jet ski. While on the phone with dispatch all three jet skis and passengers returned and the caller said no one needed medical attention. 8:26 p.m. A caller reported a small fire in the Elochoman Valley. A deputy and the Cathlamet Fire Department responded.
