On Friday, the Wahkiakum Mules football team secured first place in the Central 2B Lower East/West league with a 62-23 win against Ocosta in front of a home crowd.
"The kids played well," Coach Ryan Lorenzo said. "The skills guys played really well all night. Defense stepped up and played really good. Special teams came up with a touchdown and two onside kick recoveries. It was a great game to end our regular season."
Carlson connected 12 of 17 passes for 307 yards and four touchdowns. He led rushing with 151
yards, adding 12 yards as a receiver, and another 75 yards on one kick return. On defense he contributed 10 solo tackles. Senior wide receiver Grant Wilson gained 158 yards on five carries. He scored two touchdowns and assisted with seven tackles. Senior wide receiver Jacob Johnson had 163 all purpose yards, scoring two touchdowns.
For fun, Lorenzo said, he had the seniors run a play of their choosing. It was the final home game for seniors Zakkary Carlson, Kyler Sause, Daniel Spisla-Hongel, Jacob Johnson, Grant Wilson, Aimon Lee, Donovan Watson, Nathan Garrett, Brayden Christenson, Filip Tesar, and Unai Perez Martin.
This Tuesday, the season and the Mules' bid for a state berth ended with a 56-6 loss to perennial powerhouse, Adna. There was no report. Several Mules were named to all league teams, including Zakkary Carlson, who was named Offensive MVP.
