Quincy Grange serves up to community

This past week, I had an opportunity to sit down with President of The Quincy Grange Ellen Nieminen and talk about this year’s 49th annual Chicken Dinner. Ellen was pleased with the attendance and grateful for the local 4-H volunteers who helped serve, carry and clean up. This year, 159 dinners, equaling 400 pieces of chicken, 75 pounds of potatoes, and a mound of StoveTop Stuffing, were served by The Quincy Grange members. Dessert, apple and blueberry pie was donated by Lazy Daisy Farms. A special “thank you” goes out to Foster Farms and Safeway, which generous donations of all the chicken made this event possible. Belonging to founding Grange member Helen Cook, the recipe from the first Chicken Dinner in 1976 continues to this day.

This year’s Chicken Dinner was special because The Quincy Grange had received a grant from The Oregon State Grange to update their kitchen. There was a bit of panic to get the job done before the big event, but it all worked out. The new kitchen has easy to clean, stainless counters, plenty of under-counter bin storage, and new deeper sinks. The old cabinets and cracked counters are a thing of the past, as the new look is so much more inviting, making it a joy to rent out. Members of the Quincy Grange are so grateful to The State Grange for their Matching Funds Grant which helped update their kitchen. The Quincy Grange holds various community events throughout the year,

Including the Chicken Dinner and the Halloween Carnival, two favorites of the community. In recent years, The Quincy Grange has seen a decline in membership, as many of the original members have passed on. If you are interested in supporting your local community and bringing families together, consider joining The Quincy Grange. Together, we can continue to hold these community events for years to come. For info on rentals or membership, contact Ellen Nieminen at 503-728-2886 or Secretary Barb Callio at 503-728-4143.
