This summer, Wahkiakum County 4-H is sponsoring a youth sewing school called “Sew For Fun.” Classes will be held at the Johnson Park Sewing Room (30 Rosburg School Road, Rosburg) on Monday, July 14 through Wednesday, July 16. Times will vary, depending on the youth’s age and experience. Classes start at 9 a.m. for all and go until 11:15 a.m. for younger students. Older or more experienced sewers will go an extra hour, ending at 12:15 p.m.
Students will learn basic straight stitching, hand sewing, how to use a simple pattern, and details about basic sewing supplies and equipment. Some of the projects planned are a pincushion, needle holder and an apron. Additional projects may happen if time allows. Sewing machines are available for students to use, but they are welcome to bring their own if they are in good working order.
The registration fee is $35 for the first student and additional siblings will be $25. This includes a kit of basic sewing notions and a notebook. If you have a kit from last year’s sewing school, the fee will be $25. Class size is limited, so students will be registered on a first paid, first served basis. Registration deadline is July 9, 2025. Visit WSU Wahkiakum County Extension’s website and click on the Sewing School flier to get the registration paperwork at extension.wsu.edu/wahkiakum/ or stop by their office at 25 River Street in Cathlamet Monday through Wednesday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Youth will be enrolled in the 4-H Youth Special Interest Group, which will allow them to exhibit their completed projects under 4-H in the Youth Building at the Wahkiakum County Fair Thursday, Aug. 21 through Saturday, Aug. 23. For more information, please contact 4-H Volunteer Becca Rezac at 503-933-3899 or the Extension Office at 360-795-3278.
