HELLO. Welcome to our first weekly library news column. We thank The Eagle staff for their support, advice, and this dedicated weekly space for our column, and we thank everyone in Wahkiakum for your wonderful support of the library and reading along here.
STAFF PICKS. When you come into the library, you will find a dedicated bookcase for ‘Current Staff Picks’ of about 15 books. It is continually refreshed with new books. A few for this month include “Astoria” by author Peter Stark. This is a well researched and true adventure story of the 1810 Astor Expedition. Another staff pick is, “The World of Sugar” by Ube Bosma, considered the definitive 2,500-year history of sugar and its human costs. This book is actually part of a series by Little Island Creamery. Finally, “The Entire Sky,” written by local author Joe Wilkins, is a novel about a troubled teenager who is on the run yet manages to find solace and friendship along the way.
KID PICKS. This week, we highlight a wonderful book in the popular series “Children of the Red King.” The book “Charlie Bone and the Invisible Boy” is a magical fantasy story of a boy with unusual powers and his friend. This fast-paced story is similar to the famous Harry Potter series.
PEOPLE’S VOICE. Many people visit our library each week, and it’s wonderful to hear their thoughts and their voices. For our first kick-off of our weekly “People’s Voice,” we have a comment by Megan Blackburn Friend, who, holding a small jar of sour-dough starter which someone had dropped-off for her at the library, said, “The library has become the community center for Wahkiakum county, and my kids love coming here.”
BALD EAGLE PARADE. We’re asking for Parade volunteers. We need kids and adults to walk, ride, or roll with us in the parade. Show your public pride for the library. Interested in participating? Sign-up at the library. Thank you.
VOLUNTEERS. The library needs two new adult volunteers for our weekly D&D (Dungeons and Dragons) game activity. We have two separate groups who meet each week. If interested in helping out, please contact the library.
PASSES. Need a free Discoverer Pass? Or a free Columbia River Maritime Museum Pass? Come on into the library to reserve your pass for the days you plan on using the pass. Only one free pass is allowed per family.
SUMMER READING. Kids are really enjoying their summer reading-activity program. Would you like to participate? It’s every Thursday at Erickson Park (581 Columbia St.) from 1 to 2 p.m. Just come to the park. No sign-ups are needed.
FARMERS MARKET. We’ll be signing up and issuing library cards for folks on opening day of the West Wahkiakum Farmers Market this Friday, July 11, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Rosburg Hall (28 Rosburg Community Hall Rd).
LIBRARY CARDS. Cathlamet library cards are free for all Wahkiakum residents. Explore a multitude of wonderful books either at the library or through the Libby app with your card. Additionally, Patty Cakes and The Spar offer 15% off when you show your card. See the library ad for more details.
The Cathlamet Public Library is located at 115 Columbia St. and is open Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m.
