HELLO. We finished-up our Summer Reading & Story Time programs for the year. We will begin Story Time once again this fall in the Pioneer Community Center’s lower room.
AUGUST POP-UPS. Do you like ice cream, ice pops, bubbles, and music? Starting Aug. 7, the library will be having fun and lighthearted pop-up events down in front of the building. With activities such as face painting, paper airplanes, bubble play, marshmallow towers, and chalk drawing, each pop-up is a little different. This month’s pop-ups are Aug. 7, 9, 13, 14, 16, and 30 from 2-5 p.m.
POKEMON CLUB. Want to join a new Pokemon club? Details are still forming as far as location, days, and time, but stop by the library to join up.
PEOPLE’S VOICE. Local Cathlamet resident Collette McKnight, a library volunteer who has been a vital Summer Reading program helper, recently commented on what she enjoys about the library. “It’s great how you can check-out seeds,” said Collette. “There is such a variety of seeds to pick from. There are five seed packets per card ...and Vicki [librarian] knows so much about the seeds...especially the native plants. I love how with the crafts there is something cute to do ...Vicki does an amazing job for the community ...the library is such a gift, like a hub for the community...story keepers are most important for a community.” The seeds are yours to keep. Shane of Dollar General just gifted over 100 more new seed packets for the seed library, and it's not too late to plant cool season vegetables and pollinator favorites like marigolds and zinnias.
FICTION PICK. Our highlighted pick is “The Bomber Mafia: A Dream, a Temptation, and the Longest Night of the Second World War” by New York Times bestselling author Malcolm Gladwell. Michael Lewis, author of “Moneyball” and “The Blind Side,” described Gladwell’s book as "a riveting tale of persistence, obsession, innovation, and the incalculable wages of war... The Bomber Mafia looks at one of the greatest moral challenges of the Second World War."
KID PICK. This week we highlight the book “Smile” by Raina Telgemeier. The book is an award-winning graphic memoir based on Telgemeier’s childhood. Kirkus Reviews described the book as "irresistible, funny and touching - a must read for all teenage girls, whether en-braced or not." Publishers Weekly described the book as “charming...this book should appeal to tweens looking for a story that reflects their fears and experiences and gives them hope that things get easier."
PASSES. We will soon have the “Adventure in History Pass” free to you. This pass provides you free access to the Flavel House, Heritage Museum, and Oregon Film Museum, all in Astoria. You can also check-out a free Discover Pass or a Columbia River Maritime Museum Pass. Reserve your free pass at the library. There is a limit of one pass per family.
