During last week's primary for Wahkiakum County, current Sheriff John Mason defeated opposing candidate Josh Grasseth by a vote of 1,137 to 202. Mason took all 11 county precincts, with his strongest showings being in Skamokawa, Elochoman, and West Puget Island. A total of four write-in votes were cast, with two coming from the Columbia precinct and one each for East Puget Island and North Cathlamet. “I appreciate all the support from the community and all the confidence that they've put in me,” said Mason. “I do this because I truly love our community and our county. The sacrifice is worth it. I really appreciate everybody's support throughout my whole career since I started and even throughout my childhood growing up here. It really takes a village and everybody's been behind me the whole way. It's my pleasure to give back and to be able to work hard for everybody.”
Also during last Tuesday's Primary, Drew Jenkins defeated Justin Moriarty 858 to 425 for the Wahkiakum County Assessor position. Jenkins received more votes in 10 of the 11 precincts and tied for Precinct 1 (Deep River). A total of eight write-in votes were cast, with four coming from Columbia's precinct and one each for the Elochoman, West Puget Island, South Cathlamet, and North Cathlamet precincts. “I’m very appreciative for the support,” said Jenkins. “I’m working hard towards November.” The general election between these candidates will take place onTuesday, Nov. 4.
