Cathlamet Public Library News

HELLO. Your library now has over 1,600 members (1,608), which is approximately 33 percent of our county. You have made this happen, and we thank each of you who have recently signed up, received a library card, and have become a member. We will now move on to our next upward step of 1,700 members, as we continue to reach out to all residents and make everyone aware of what our public library has to offer. Thank you so much and let’s keep moving forward to make our library even better.

COUNTY FAIR. The library had a booth at the 117th Annual Wahkiakum County Fair. It was wonderful seeing each of you who stopped by and chatted. We had crafts, hand stamps, stickers, and bubbles. On Saturday, we had library volunteer Collette reading to kids, helping with the Boot craft, and handing out Otter Pops. Other volunteers helped out in many various ways as well. During the three days of the fair, 30 more residents of our county became proud card-carrying members of the Cathlamet Public Library. A big thank you to each of you, and a final big shout out to Carillon and Tochina, who helped at our booth. Thank you for your support.

COOLING SHELTER. The library is a designated Cooling Shelter for Wahkiakum county. On Aug. 22-23, we were open as a cooling shelter from noon to 8 p.m. to provide a place for folks to cool off and escape from the heat.

LIBBY APP. This is a wonderful app for Cathlamet library card members. It can be downloaded immediately when you receive your Cathlamet library card. The Libby app provides you free ebooks, digital audiobooks, and magazines. You can use it on iPhones, Androids, Kindles, Fire tablets, Chromebooks, laptops, and desktop computers. As a reminder, your ZIP code is your PIN, so when you download the Libby app for the first time and are prompted for your PIN, enter your ZIP code.

FICTION PICK. Our highlighted pick is “The Correspondent: A Novel.” It is a national, best-selling book by author Virginia Evans. Award-winning author Ann Patchett said of the book, "Subtly told and finely made. The Correspondent is a portrait of a small life expanding. Virginia Evans shows how one woman changes at a point when change had seemed impossible. That change, like this novel, turns out to be a cause for celebration.“ American novelist and short-story author Elinor Lipman stated, “Thank you, Virginia Evans, for a life beautifully told in letters; for creating a character whose mind struggles with her heart in a most intriguing, sympathetic, witty, and binge-worthy way.”

YOUTH PICK. This week, we highlight the book “Path to the Stars: My Journey from Girl Scout to Rocket Scientist” by Sylvia Acevedo. The book is seen as an inspiring memoir for young readers. School Library Journal described the book as "a gem of an autobiography.” The review went on to state, “The text is accessible, and the story of Acevedo’s life touches upon a number of salient points for readers, including racism, gender roles, and educational inequality.” Kirkus Reviews stated, “Those seeking stories of female STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) trailblazers will find much to love here. Encouraging and uplifting.”
