Cathlamet Library News

HELLO. Are you a student, teacher, home-schooler, educator, or parent? We want you to know the Cathlamet Public Library is here for you. Please come in and enjoy.

NASELLE-G.R. SCHOOL DISTRICT. Library staff was at the Naselle-Grays River Valley School Open House event on Wednesday, Aug. 27. We had a wonderful time talking with folks, signing-up new library members, and answering questions about our library. A big thank you goes out to all the parents, students, teachers, and staff for their warm welcome and support.

WAHKIAKUM HIGH SCHOOL. We recently met with English Teacher Audrey Petterson and discussed a plan for all of her classes to come and visit. There, the students can see what the library has to offer and have an opportunity to receive a library card if they do not already have one. Last year, we signed-up and provided library cards to nearly all of the high-school students. Our hope is the library may be a learning resource opportunity for students. A big thank you goes out to Principal Stephanie Leitz and Audrey Petterson for their wonderful support.

WESTEND DELIVERY. Starting Thursday, Oct. 2, we will begin a new Westend-Cathlamet Library Delivery/Pick-up service every Thursday from 2–3 p.m., at the Raistakka Fire Station 2 in Rosburg. We look forward to providing our Westend county library members with this delivery/pick-up service. This is a six-month pilot program, so show your support and let’s make it work. For details on how to utilize this service, please see the library website.

NONFICTION PICK. Our highlighted pick is “The Lewis and Clark Expedition Day by Day” by author Gary Moulton. Amanda Laugesen of Kansas History stated, "While it has obvious appeal for those fascinated by the Lewis and Clark expedition, it also offers insight into Native American life and European-indigenous relations in the early nineteenth century. The complex life of the continent before the spread of European settlement beyond the Missouri is brought poignantly into focus. In our age of global environmental threat, the great biodiversity that is described by the members of the Corps of Discovery is also a stark reminder of all that has been lost. In short, Moulton’s book is highly recommended."

YOUTH PICK. This week we highlight a story of survival and resilience with the book “The Secret Pocket” by Peggy Janicki. Regarding the book, Quill & Quire stated, “An engaging and important story, this book is highly recommended for home, public, and school libraries.” Kirkus Reviews stated, “Though the tale is emotionally fraught, young readers are left with an uplifting reminder about the power and resolve of Indigenous people.”

WEST WAHKIAKUM FARMERS MARKET. Do you live on the Westend and need a Cathlamet library card? We’re at the Market where you can receive one. The Market is every Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. at Rosburg Hall.
