On Labor Day, The Clatskanie Arts commission launched their 36th Season with "The Big Band in the Park", an annual event, sponsored by Donna Garlock, held every Labor Day at Clatskanie City Park. The event is free to the public, with refreshments for sale to benefit The Clatskanie Arts Commission. It was a beautiful day for a concert. Many locals, with chairs in tow, were treated to a delightful array of classic music, from Big Band to Jazz and Blues. The North Coast Big Band is an ensemble comprised of local gifted musicians and headed by band leader and percussionist, Lee Stromquist. A big "Thank You" to all the volunteers that made this event possible.

The Clatskanie Cultural Center, in collaboration with The Clatskanie Foundation, have started "The Eloise Campaign" to raise money for a marquee on the Birkenfield Theater to attract more attention from Hwy 30 to the performing arts in Clatskanie. Eloise was an elephant that had escaped her handlers when the traveling circus came to Clatskanie City Park. In June of 1980, She and her mother went for a swim in the Clatskanie River, evading their handlers and entertained the local folks. For fun and in commemoration, a fundraiser was started in her name to help fund the Clatskanie Cultural Center marquee. For a $100 donation, a 5 ft cutout of Eloise will visit the front porch of your Clatskanie friend, neighbor or relative. The elephant is voice activated for added amusement. The Birkenfield Theater is about to enter its 100th year and in celebration, The Clatskanie Foundation is hoping to add some "Broadway Lights" to our little town. Anyone interested in participating in "The Eloise Campaign" or donating to the marquee fund should contact Debbie 503-338-8268 or Elsa 503-338-9770 or visit clatskaniefoundation.com.
