The Clatskanie Tigers varsity football team used a strong ground game offensively to defeat visiting Stanfield 50-12 last Friday. Jumping out to a 21-0 lead partway through the second quarter, the Tigers were aided by two short touchdown runs by senior Lucas Andreasen and another by junior Michael Simpson. After a touchdown throw by Stanfield High School quarterback Jacob Crawford brought the score to 21-6, the Tigers responded in kind with four straight of their own. Sophomore quarterback Will Van Voorst was involved in three of the four touchdowns, passing for two and running for one. The final score of the night came in the third quarter via a one-yard run by sophomore Landyn Winton.
"I'm proud of our kids," said Head Coach Sean Gorley. "We didn't start as mentally sharp as I would have liked. Too many penalties out of the gate, but they refocused and got to work. On offense, we got great effort out of our line, and our skills guys all made big plays. On defense, we were flying around. We forced multiple turnovers. It's good to see us swarming the ball."
Andreasen, who ran for 90 yards and a touchdown, led the team in tackles as well with five. Senior Quentin Combs had an interception and a recovered fumble for the Tigers, while senior Daylon Gutierrez hauled down an interception as well. Van Voorst contributed to his own cause defensively with a recovered fumble, and junior Ethan Hallowell recovered a fumble as well to round out the defense. The Tigers (2-0) travel to Rainier Friday, Sept. 19 to take on the Columbians at 7 p.m. The team will then return Friday, Sept. 26 to take on Vernonia at 7 p.m.
