Swim pool volunteers honored

People from throughout the county who gave volunteer service this past summer at the Julia Butler Hansen Municipal Swimming pool were honored at a coffee hour given by Effie Wright and Elizabeth Doumit on October 16 at the Doumit home.

Over 800 hours of service which would have cost at least $1600.00 were donated during the three months’ period that the pool was open to the public. These civic minded persons worked in the office regularly every week selling tickets or taking care of the bags containing personal belongings of the swimmers.

The Town of Cathlamet budgets $9000.00 annually for the maintenance and operation of the pool during June, July and August. It is hoped and anticipated that the swimming fees will provide the labor costs of the manager and the life guards. During the past season the receipts from the swimming fees and donations amounted to $2962.73 which was less than the paid labor costs. Thus the contribution of the volunteer labor in the office, which saved an additional cost of $1600.00 was of vital importance to the successful operation of the pool.
