The Oregon school cell phone ban, part 2

In our last article, we discussed the cell-phone ban in Oregon. There are definitely pros to this ban. However, in this article, we will be seeing some of the cons of the cell-phone ban.

There is an article titled “Why I Support Banning Cell Phones in Schools.” The author, Anne Moss Rogers, said that she did not mean for students to "put their smartphones in their pockets on silent while they buzz incessantly, or even turned off." In her statement, she said that they are accessible and she is correct. However, my opinion from what I see [is that] many students lack self-control. How will we ever learn self-control if they are taken away from us?

Rogers says to put them in lockers; but, to be honest, is it really safe in school to have our phones locked up? I have heard so many students and parents say that schools are still unsafe to have such a rule. We just had a school shooting in Minnesota. There are pros and cons to this dilemma. Students should learn self-control, and we can help them develop this skill by allowing them to keep their phones in their backpacks.

Adults have the free will to have phones, but they do not use them when they are not supposed to. We must teach our students the same. We have been conditioned to be this way with our phones. We can learn to use technology in a safe and healthy way. That is how we can draw boundaries. We live in an age of modern technology.
