CLOUDY START--As I begin this column, it's pretty cloudy with just a smattering of raindrops, but it appears we'll be seeing some more "real rain" a little later on, so I hope you've kept the boots and umbrellas by the door! For now, the snowflake that had appeared in the forecast on my weather app has disappeared and I sure hope it stays gone. Considering there is a blizzard going on back east with tens of thousands without power and feet of snow on the ground, I'm quite happy to put up with the rain! COLD BEGINNING--As this week began, we not only saw some extreme fogginess, but it was also below freezing, which meant the water buckets for the animals were covered in ice and it definitely meant being inside was much more pleasant. Once the fog let up, we did get to see some sunshine which was most welcome. According to the forecast, we are going to be back to rain by this weekend, so while I didn't care much for the freezing cold, I sure enjoyed the dry part that came with it. CALMER--We were all very relieved to have a much calmer weather pattern this past weekend, which gave us some milder temperatures and some sunshine and also some awesome sunrises and sunsets. After the snow and the relentless rainfall and flooding, this break was definitely appreciated. The current weather forecast for a drier weekend also suggests much colder temperatures, so we'll have to keep an eye out for the possibility of temperatures falling into the freezing category. NASTY WEATHER--I wrote last week that the rains were coming and that I had hoped we wouldn't get hit too hard, but unfortunately, that didn't happen. Sadly, our area and most of our state, simply got hammered with the relentless rainfall that melted the mountains of snow we already had and along with high tides, brought massive flooding everywhere! So, we went from over a foot of snow, to multiple feet of water, which covered all of our valley floors and washed out culverts, tore up the blacktop and destroyed roads, stranded animals, brought...
MELTING--As I begin this column, we still have plenty of snow on the ground in West Valley, with a layer of ice on top, but we are also seeing some raindrops, so the hope is that we see green grass soon. Of course, we are also hoping for some rather slow thawing conditions so we don't wind up in a flooding situation, which we have seen happen before. WHITE CHRISTMAS--For all those folks who were wishing for a white Christmas, it certainly looked like you got your wish! I had hoped we'd just get a couple of inches but Sunday's snowfall was quite impressive, that's for sure! The heavy snow brought branches and trees down and caused some power bumps and even power outages. COLD/SNOW--As I begin this column, there are snowflakes falling and I must say, "I am not amused!" Actually KM Mountain at MP 22 is very white indeed so that may catch a few people off-guard, but hopefully everyone is prepared for these wintery conditions. Maybe by the time you read this, it will all be gone and we won't have to worry about it as we go into the weekend; fingers crossed! It seems when we have a million holiday things to do and places to go and events happening, that the weather opts to dump some horrible weather event upon us....
NIPPY--We woke up Sunday morning to temperatures below freezing so it was definitely a reminder that one needs an extra blanket on their bed and to put on some warmer apparel when they go outside! The rest of the week is looking mighty wet, so we can't forget our rubber boots, umbrellas and rain coats either! I just hope we don't have more slides or flooding at this busy time of year. WET ENOUGH?--This last weekend of November has definitely been a wet one, as once again we've had inches of rain per day and the creeks and streams have risen and our fields are more like lakes again. NICE BREAK--As I begin this column, we are having a nice break from the rain. While it was so foggy in West Valley on Sunday morning that it blocked our television reception for a bit. It did clear up and warmed up some and wound up to be a pretty decent day. However, by the time I went to bed, we had gotten down to freezing again, so I hope you've had those faucets covered and your plants inside. NOT NICE--As all the flooded fields and roadways, rock slides, fallen trees and outages can attest to, it was not nice out there this past week! As always, flooded fields and roadways weren't too bad in some areas, while other spots were really bad, so if one needed to be out and about, then you needed to be driving with extreme care. Our neighbors had a close call with a tree that came down off the "rock wall" just west of Skamokawa, so those trees that fall with no warning are really a hazard and a reminder that all this wonderful greenery...
NOT TOO NICE--As this week begins, we've got thunder and downpours and some wind. Saturday had us dodging large hailstones off and on in West Valley, in between the heavy rain showers and a few sun breaks, so depending on where you were and when, you were either enjoying a little outdoor time, or you were hiding inside. NICE ENDING--I was so happy to have the last weekend of October turn out to be a really nice one, as so often our Halloween events and our little trick or treaters wind up sloshing through the puddles and having to cover their costumes with rain jackets, but not this year; yippee! VEHICLE CHECK--We went through a lot of road work around here this past summer. Many folks were dealing with chipped or broken windshields, but those kinds of issues are readily seen and most likely taken care of rather quickly. What some don't see are the running lights, brake or signal lights or headlights that may have gotten dinged by some of those flying rocks. I have seen multiple vehicles lately that have lights that are no longer working, so with more hours of our day being dark, it would be wise of us to do a "walk around" our...
WET BEGINNING--As I begin this column, it's a very drippy Sunday morning. However, we all know how quickly these forecasts can change. The "mostly dry" week has now changed and so there's only a couple of dry looking days in the current weather forecast. We'll see how that turns out. With a little luck those wet days will turn into mostly dry days but I guess we'll have to wait and see. WILD ONE--This past weekend had us listening to rolling thunder, accompanied by some flashy lightning and we saw and heard some very heavy rains, along with howling winds! I was happy that we didn't lose power throughout the nastiest part of this event, but we did lose it for about an hour during a calm period on Sunday evening, which seemed weird. While I certainly wasn't expecting it to happen during the calmest part of the day, at least I was prepared for it. CHANGING--After a warm and sunny weekend, with just a bit of mist Sunday morning, it looks like we may be in for some real weather changes for the weekend. SOME DAMPNESS--Our past weekend was pretty nice, after thick fog in the morning hours. A couple days prior to that though, we had some "heavy mist" here and I thought that was just great! COOLER--We have started out this week with some morning drizzle, which was nice to settle the dust for a bit and give the leaf feeding plants a little moisture, so that was great.However, it's usually back to dryness by noon and depending on where you were, it was either "mostly cloudy" or "mostly sunny" as we all know that the weather from Skamokawa to Cathlamet can be completely different on any given day! COOLER/WET?--According to the forecast, we may actually see some showers this week but as of Monday morning, it was just cloudy, but drizzle Tuesday morning was a possibility. We'll also have to wait and see if the Friday forecast for 30 percent chance of drizzle comes true, and considering it's Fair time, well, we almost expect it!
