  • Skamokawa News: Last weekend for Redmen Hall event

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 9, 2021

NIPPY--We woke up Sunday morning to temperatures below freezing so it was definitely a reminder that one needs an extra blanket on their bed and to put on some warmer apparel when they go outside! The rest of the week is looking mighty wet, so we can't forget our rubber boots, umbrellas and rain coats either! I just hope we don't have more slides or flooding at this busy time of year. While all this gray, wet and ugly weather persists, please be sure to turn on those headlights, as they may not help you see, but it sure helps others see you!...

WET ENOUGH?--This last weekend of November has definitely been a wet one, as once again we've had inches of rain per day and the creeks and streams have risen and our fields are more like lakes again. By the time you read this on Thursday, it's supposed to be dry for a couple of days so I certainly hope that's true as we've all got things to do and places to go in order to get ready for the holidays. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Dec. 2-8 are Menoka Martin, Maria Snow, Mackenizie Allen, Hank Bassi, Dennis Reed, Kitty Speranza,...

NICE BREAK--As I begin this column, we are having a nice break from the rain. While it was so foggy in West Valley on Sunday morning that it blocked our television reception for a bit. It did clear up and warmed up some and wound up to be a pretty decent day. However, by the time I went to bed, we had gotten down to freezing again, so I hope you've had those faucets covered and your plants inside. It looks to be dry for Wednesday when this paper comes out, however, it looks like the rain will be returning for your Thanksgiving Day dinner, so...

NOT NICE--As all the flooded fields and roadways, rock slides, fallen trees and outages can attest to, it was not nice out there this past week! As always, flooded fields and roadways weren't too bad in some areas, while other spots were really bad, so if one needed to be out and about, then you needed to be driving with extreme care. Our neighbors had a close call with a tree that came down off the "rock wall" just west of Skamokawa, so those trees that fall with no warning are really a hazard and a reminder that all this wonderful greenery...

  • Many events scheduled for coming weeks

NOT TOO NICE--As this week begins, we've got thunder and downpours and some wind. Saturday had us dodging large hailstones off and on in West Valley, in between the heavy rain showers and a few sun breaks, so depending on where you were and when, you were either enjoying a little outdoor time, or you were hiding inside. With the exception of this past sunny Monday, this week looks to be pretty wet. With all this darkness and gloomy weather, it's really imperative to turn on those headlights as while you may be able to see, people can't always...

  • Daylight Savings ends Saturday at midnight

NICE ENDING--I was so happy to have the last weekend of October turn out to be a really nice one, as so often our Halloween events and our little trick or treaters wind up sloshing through the puddles and having to cover their costumes with rain jackets, but not this year; yippee! It was great to have the sunshine out on Sunday, but I do wish the freezing morning hours could have stayed away a little longer; brrr! Those temps took me by surprise so I was definitely feeling the chill when I first got up but thrilled to see the blue sky and sunsh...

  • Lots of Halloween events this weekend

NASTY OUT--I believe it goes without saying that we have had a wet and nasty beginning to this week but thankfully, we did have some nice breaks in there on Sunday so we didn't get the nastiness all day, nor the all night downpours that have caused us massive flooding or long outages in the past. Of course I am writing this a bit early while I still have power and internet, so hopefully the prior statement is still true by the time you read this! I do know one thing, the rain and wind combo sure took down the leaves in our area, as well as...

  • FOS auction coming to a close this Saturday

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 21, 2021

WET START--As this week begins we certainly are having a soggy day, so I'm happy that we had a nice Saturday and hopefully the forecast for a dry Monday and Tuesday came true, as the rest of the upcoming week looks pretty doggone wet! Fortunately for us, the forecast often changes at a moment's notice and we wind up drier than planned, so we'll keep our fingers crossed that this latest storm system will veer to the north of us. However, if it does happen to come straight at us, it definitely loo...

VEHICLE CHECK--We went through a lot of road work around here this past summer. Many folks were dealing with chipped or broken windshields, but those kinds of issues are readily seen and most likely taken care of rather quickly. What some don't see are the running lights, brake or signal lights or headlights that may have gotten dinged by some of those flying rocks. I have seen multiple vehicles lately that have lights that are no longer working, so with more hours of our day being dark, it would be wise of us to do a "walk around" our...

WET BEGINNING--As I begin this column, it's a very drippy Sunday morning. However, we all know how quickly these forecasts can change. The "mostly dry" week has now changed and so there's only a couple of dry looking days in the current weather forecast. We'll see how that turns out. With a little luck those wet days will turn into mostly dry days but I guess we'll have to wait and see. BURN BAN WAS LIFTED--The burn ban in our area has been lifted, so all the tree branch burners were happy to be rid of their piles of brush this past weekend....

DAMP--As this week begins, it's just a tadbit cloudy and it's looking like rain will be arriving before long. It looks to be quite wet in the coming days, so I hope you've got your boots and umbrellas by the door as I think you're going to need them. The forecast says I won't be watering any plants for the next couple of days but we should have a decent weekend, so we'll hope that holds true. Hello, Fall! This means many holidays are coming up: Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas, and usually there is an extra need for food items for those...

  • Covered Bridge Dinner has been canceled

WILD ONE--This past weekend had us listening to rolling thunder, accompanied by some flashy lightning and we saw and heard some very heavy rains, along with howling winds! I was happy that we didn't lose power throughout the nastiest part of this event, but we did lose it for about an hour during a calm period on Sunday evening, which seemed weird. While I certainly wasn't expecting it to happen during the calmest part of the day, at least I was prepared for it. A big thank you to the PUD crew for having our power back on in such a short time!...

CHANGING--After a warm and sunny weekend, with just a bit of mist Sunday morning, it looks like we may be in for some real weather changes for the weekend. Friday looks to be the start of several days of rain, so while it's not great for those with weekend plans, I know all of us living amongst the dry forests are truly hoping to see some decent rainfall out of this to help negate some of our fire danger. With these systems often falling apart before they reach us, we're keeping our fingers crossed that this time we actually get some of this mu...

CLOUDY BEGINNING--As this week begins, it's a bit cloudy but still fairly warm, so it's pretty good weather to be working outside. The rest of the week looks to be a mix of sun and clouds and comfortable temperatures, so those days will be enjoyable. However, it will also be interesting to see if the hot days forecast for this past Tuesday and Wednesday actually happen or not. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Sept 9-15 are Carla Keilwitz, Edward Johnson, Amanda Poler, Brittnie Helms-Lampitt, Jamie Nielsen, Tina Schubert, Shayne...

SOME DAMPNESS--Our past weekend was pretty nice, after thick fog in the morning hours. A couple days prior to that though, we had some "heavy mist" here and I thought that was just great! Not everybody got damp like we did west of Skamokawa, but hey, I'll gladly take any moisture that comes our way these days. This week's forecast is for some pretty decent days with a few clouds but warming up by the time you read this. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Sept. 2-8 are Quin Bassi, Tristan Collupy, Glenn Wiest, Kathy McNally, Chuck...

COOLER--We have started out this week with some morning drizzle, which was nice to settle the dust for a bit and give the leaf feeding plants a little moisture, so that was great. However, it's usually back to dryness by noon and depending on where you were, it was either "mostly cloudy" or "mostly sunny" as we all know that the weather from Skamokawa to Cathlamet can be completely different on any given day! If weather models hold up, the weekend may actually be sunnier and warmer, so I'm sure that would be great for all of those trying to get...

  • See you at the 113th Wahkiakum Co. Fair

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 19, 2021

COOLER/WET?--According to the forecast, we may actually see some showers this week but as of Monday morning, it was just cloudy, but drizzle Tuesday morning was a possibility. We'll also have to wait and see if the Friday forecast for 30 percent chance of drizzle comes true, and considering it's Fair time, well, we almost expect it! You see, it's sort of a running joke with all us locals as it can be dry for weeks and months on end but come Fair time, well, we wind up with some rain! Not always of course, but about 9 out of 10 times, I'd say...

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 12, 2021

DAMPNESS/HEAT--As this new week begins, we are enjoying a mild, dry day after a pretty good soaking on Saturday. Here in West Valley, it was a nice steady mist which lasted most of the day and I was very thankful for that. However, temperatures are on the rise again and it could bring temperatures back up into those dangerous mid-90s or higher range, so I hope everyone has prepared themselves for that. Please keep yourself and all your critters hydrated and remember, the sun is not your friend if you're out in it very long, even with...

STILL DRY--While we have had some morning clouds and it's been cooler in our area, compared to the areas east of us, it's still plenty dry out there, so I can only hope that the forecast for showers at the end of this week, actually materialize. As seen by our tree lined highways, our once very green trees are really looking very burned and while it was just the Cedar trees that looked bad at first, now it's the Fir, Hemlock and Spruce trees as well, so that's really alarming as I don't remember ever seeing them look this way. Needless to say,...

STILL DRY--While Germany, Belgium and other countries are getting hammered by massive amounts of rain, and even our southern states are getting wet, most of us around our area are staying pretty doggone dry. Some areas got some slight mist, but for the most part, dry is the word for the month and it looks to stay that way until this month is over and even into the next one, so please continue to be vigilant when it comes to fire or anything that could accidently start one. I hope you're able to sufficiently keep yourselves and your animals...

LOOKING GOOD--As this week begins, we started out with a very sunny Sunday morning and with temps in the low 80s, it's just what the hay makers wanted to see. The forecast is looking dry with maybe a few days with a bit of cloudiness and temperatures in the low 70s, so that's sounding perfect to me. FIRE DANGER--It's still very important to be wary of anything that could cause a spark which could start a fire. As we have seen, there are thousands of acres in our Pacific NW area that are currently burning out of control and we really don't want...

STILL WARM--It's not blazing hot outside like it was for awhile there, but it's still plenty warm, so don't forget to keep that hat on and slather the sunscreen on as well, as it doesn't take much to become a "crispy critter" when you're out on the water or playing on the beach! The forecast this week for temps in the high 60s and low 70s are much more welcomed to me, so here's hoping that these perfect temps continue for our upcoming big events this weekend; fingers crossed! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from July 15-21 are Mariett...

COOLER--I don't know about you but these cloudy mornings, with sunny afternoons and more moderate temperatures, like in the 70s, is just right for me! I think the plants enjoyed a break from the intense heat as well, as there were many trees and shrubs showing a lot of burned areas on them, along with the curling, dead leaves on other plants. From some of the pictures I saw, some very sunburned people might be happier without the extreme heat too! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from July 8-14 are Jaiden Mahitka, Irene Martin, Patty...

  • Be careful with fireworks, it's dry

    Kay Chamberlain|Jul 1, 2021

HOT HOT HOT--Hot was the word for this past weekend and the start of this week, so for all you sun lovers, I hope you got your fill of it, as the rest of us folks who don't enjoy it as much, have had plenty of it! Being nice and warm is one thing, but once temps climb into the 90-100 range, it's just so dangerous for man and beast, that I really dread it. I hope all of you came through this heat bubble unscathed, as getting sunburned or having health problems from too much heat is not only miserable, but in some cases, can be deadly. Let's...

  • PIGYS event this weekend on P.I

    Kay Chamberlain|Jun 24, 2021

PRETTY NICE--We had a very toasty Monday and if the forecast holds true, we've got another batch of hot days as well, so I hope you're all staying well hydrated and as cool as possible. However, our Tuesday morning "drizzle" was definitely a surprise, but probably not for those in the midst of making hay. Let's hope it's just a brief amount and it dries out in no time and the hay makers and beachcombers are happy once again by the time you read this. BE RESPONSIBLE--This is also the time that we hear many, many horror stories of animals and...
