GREAT ENDING--Last Friday was nothing but sunshine and warm temperatures. It was so nice, it was almost a shock to the system. With sunshine for a few days, it was time to get that outside work done as they said it wasn't going to last too long. I hope you beat the rain showers late Saturday, and made sure dad got to rest on Father's Day, although it was making any outdoor BBQ plans a little dismal. Hopefully all you dads had a great day anyway!

While it is warm outside, remember your four-legged friend is wearing a heavy winter coat, so leaving him in a car when it's even just 70 degrees, can be extremely dangerous. So leave Fido home in a nice cool place and not in a stifling hot car. That crack of air from the window isn't going to cut it either. As a test, put on your heavy wool coat, jump in the car, and sit there for a bit; you'll find out real quick what your poor pet has to deal with.

ANTIQUE SALE--Today, (Thursday) is the big opening of the Antique Sale at Redmen Hall, beginning at noon. Take a look around at all those things that folks have brought in from attics and barns, and hopefully find something you really want and can't live without! This sale will take place on June 21- 24 and June 28-July 1, so you will be able to find some unique items at the hall from noon to 4 p.m. If you have any questions, call 795-3007 during those hours.

GOOD SHOWING--The first of the Horsemanship Challenge Series certainly turned out a great many riders last Saturday at the fairgrounds as they took part in the three different events within this challenge. The next challenge will be held on July 14 and if you have any questions, contact the show manager, Tina Merz at 360-957-5368 or leave a message at the Fair office, 795-3480 or call Becky at 360-560-0371. There are saddles to be won for those who wind up with the most points, so that's a pretty great prize. The last of the series will take place on the last day of the Wahkiakum Fair, which is on August 18.

WAHKIAKUM 4-H--Lisa Frink will be taking 13 kids to the 2012 Teen Conference: Revolution of Responsibility, at Washington State University during the third week of June, where the kids will learn some positive life skills, all about campus life and various career opportunities. We are happy to announce that some of these 4-H kids will be serving up some coffee and cookies during the upcoming Smoky Water Follies, which will give them an opportunity to help raise money for trips like these which are essential to helping our kids become productive adults. Of course, if you'd like to make a donation to these kids ahead of time, I'm sure you could contact the Wahkiakum Extension office at 795- 3278 and they could let you know how to do that.

FOLLIES--Speaking of the Smoky Water Follies the three day musical revue is next weekend, from June 29-July 1. You can buy tickets at several places in Cathlamet, like the Bank of the Pacific, Sharon's Pizza and More, The Video Store and Moore's Auto and Marine (NAPA) Store, as well as the Skamokawa Resort General Store and the Bank of the Pacific in Naselle. Don't forget that a Friday night ticket for a family is just $20. Individuals tickets are $10, so buy one today. All of our performers are volunteers who have been practicing hard to help the Skamokawa Grange with this important fund raiser, so we hope you'll come and check everybody out.

While you're there, you'll get to see our latest improvement: curtains! Yes indeed, after many long years of paper curtains, we finally have some real curtains, with rods and brackets made by our very own granger and blacksmith, Mike Linn, so we truly appreciate his work on this project. We must also thank B.J. Cornett for coming to our rescue and volunteering to sew up the curtains we purchased that were way too long, and she had them ready for us in a jiffy. To top it off, she made the tie-backs to boot, so we really appreciate her generosity. With your help we can continue to make improvements and be able to keep the doors open for other organizations, like the Dollars for Scholars, Friends of Skamokawa and the Wahkiakum Fair Board, as well as the public, for their fund raisers.

CHEAP ADS--If you'd like to help sponsor the Skamokawa Grange's upcoming three day performance and advertise your business to hundreds of people for just $10, call me at 795-3425 and you'll get three lines in our program insert. Bigger ads are available as well, so a $20 ad can get you a squared off section, and twice the amount of space as the three line spot. Selling line ads is a great way for us to recoup some of our own advertising costs and gives you a great way to tout your business for a very reasonable price. We really appreciate all your past support and hopefully, your continued support.

IN ASTORIA--It's a big weekend in Astoria as they will be hosting the 45th Annual Scandinavian Midsummer Festival at the Clatsop County Fairgrounds June 22-24. You can learn all about the culture, hear some great music, and enjoy some stage productions, so there will be a lot to see and do. There will be over 50 booths featuring arts, crafts, foods, demonstrations and other great Scandinavian things, so check it out if you happen to have some time. REUNION MEETING & MORE--Several people gathered last Saturday morning to go over the progress of the upcoming Mule Train, All School Reunion, which means that everybody who ever went to school here is more than welcome to come back and see your old classmates. If you know somebody who's not a big computer person or doesn't get The Eagle, please tell them about the August 4 reunion at John Thomas Middle School and Julius Wendt Elementary School. We'll begin at noon, with a short welcome at 1 p.m. and then pictures around 4 p.m., so by that time, everyone should have gotten there, gabbed a lot and eaten.

The FFA kids will serve the burgers, hot dogs, chips and pop, along with potato salad, beans and cake, and that meal is included in your $20 per person fee, and it also covers all the other expenses incurred as well. There was a whole lot of mailing to be done and RSVPs to send out. If you didn't get one, please contact Susan Kuhn right away, at sjmcq1@yahoo.com and make sure you put something pertaining to the reunion in the subject line so she knows it's not spam. Forms and information are available on Facebook on the Mule Train page so that's the easiest way to get one. T-shirt forms are available as well, so if you need one, let her know right away, as time is ticking and the reunion will be here before you know it. Each class is responsible for decorating their own table, having memory books or doing anything else that they may want to do in order to make the day special. Hours are from noon to 5 p.m., but coming a little early to get registered with your name tag, etc. would be ideal.

Don't forget, there will be a dance with a DJ, which also does karaoke, over at the Norse Hall later on that evening, beginning at 8 p.m. until 1 a.m., and that is being put on by WA-KI-HI alumni, Wayne Gross. A $5 donation is requested to attend the doings over there. It is BYOB. It should be great fun and bring back the good ole days of when we used to have dances there all the time. Here's hoping there is a great turn out for this first ever all school reunion! Go Mules!

AWHILE BACK--It's been awhile now, but in a column some time ago, I had asked if anyone knew the name of the store down towards the dock in Cathlamet, and I just got handed that information by Ora Loraine Bauer, as that store belonged to her dad, Mel Coates. The store was called Cathlamet Meat Market and it was sold to Ward Holloway in 1946, with her dad just keeping the lockers; local butcher and cattle hauling and that store was called the Wahkiakum Refrigeration Company.
