I like soccer enough that every four years I try to watch the World Cup games on TV. This international tournament is going on right now. I probably should have entered the lottery they hold for tickets, won, of course, and headed off to South Africa to watch the matches in person. It probably would have been cheaper than how I spent my summer vacation. I came down with a severe case of the chills early in the morning June 9. During the day, my left leg ached. I took aspirin and didn't go to work that Wednesday morning, when we put the paper to...
School’s out, but where is summer? Only a few teaser days so far, so that must mean it will be a warm late summer, right? After our whirlwind weekend last weekend it was great to come home and just sit for a while. We attended a high school graduation in Redmond. Oregon on Friday night for our grandson and got up the next morning for the four hour drive to Ellensburg for the college graduation at 1:30 p.m. Lots of driving and lots of celebrating (not to mention, while in Oregon, we celebrated three birthdays as well). Time certainly does f...
It is beginning to look like the warmer weather will be here sometime soon. The sun has actually shown a few days in a row, as well. I also see plants poking their heads up out of the gardens, so maybe, just maybe we will have a summer this year. News from Naselle: High school graduation! A whole new chapter in life for the class of 2010, after 13 years in school, muddling through all the pains and joys of growing up to this point, and now—where to from here? Just coming this far has been a huge accomplishment for many and we need to commend th...
Wahkiakum County officials are working on a plan to continue funding security officers for the county district and superior courts. District Court Judge Bill Faubion and Superior Court Judge Michael Sullivan have hired two retired police officers as security officers under a state grant which expires at the end of June. The grant has been discontinued in the state government budget cuts, and this week, the judges asked that the commissioners authorize them to spend $6,000 from their Trial Court Improvement Fund to fund court security for the...
Wahkiakum County Commissioners on Tuesday approved a proposal to work with the US Fish and Wildlife Service to repair a tide gate and culvert on Brooks Slough Road. In other business, the board and Prosecuting Attorney Dan Bigelow discussed points that should be included in an ordinance regulating biosolids, and the board delayed action on a request to restore staffing in the Health and Human Services Department. The tide gate and culvert are very small and weren't included in a larger construction project to replace other culverts and tide...
As I sit here writing this column, I’m more than a little sore after a wonderful weekend with our kids in central Oregon and our oldest son and his family from California. On a whim we decided to try out our new rain gear and make the trip on the Harley. It worked out great except that my husband’s boots weren’t waterproof. Needless to say, wet, cold feet don’t make a guy very happy. After a five-hour ride, we arrived and began to enjoy the weekend. On Saturday we headed to Smith Rock for some hiking and four hours later we were all headed...
Is it ever going to be spring? It has been so cold; I’m surprised any gardens are growing. Some folks haven’t even planted yet. Hopefully it will warm up soon. News from Naselle: It’s hard to believe another school year is about to end. The kids that are graduating this year are the class that I volunteered in when we first moved here. This class has come a long way and we should be very proud of them. No matter what they choose to do, I wish them well, and much success. On that note, I have received a graduation invitation from one of those...
Wahkiakum County Commissioners Blair Brady, Dan Cothren and Lisa worked on issues ranging from a capital projects plan to computer programming licensing fees when they met Tuesday. The board met with county department heads to continue discussions on how to prioritize capital improvement projects that can be funded through the Capital Projects Fund. The fund gets revenue from a tax on real estate transactions; the funds can only be spent on public infrastructure projects. After an hour of discussion, the group agreed to have to prioritizing...
The Wahkiakum County board of commissioners will schedule an evening public forum on a proposal to form the Columbia-Pacific National Heritage Area (NHA). Proponents say the designation would bring private and federal money into the region that would be distributed through a revolving loan program to people wanting to maintain and preserve industry and business unique to the heritage of the area. The proposal has drawn opposition from citizens afraid it will lead to tight governmental control over land use. Commissioners took public comment on...
Memorial Day is Monday, and here is some information from Flagandbanner.com about related observances, Armed Forces Day and Peace Officers Memorial Day: In the United States, Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May. Good or evil? Innocent or devious? Economically beneficial or personally threatening? Wahkiakum County commissioners and their guests spent over two hours Tuesday discussing the potential for a proposed Columbia-Pacific Natural Heritage Area (NHA) without getting closer to an answer to those questions. ShoreBank Enterprise Cascadia, a non-profit bank headquartered in Ilwaco, is conducting a feasibility study about the start of the Columbia-Pacific NHA, a project that came out of cooperative efforts of the regions economic development councils...
Commissioners from four lower Columbia River counties continue to evolve their collaborative effort for a united lobbying front on fishery issues. Members of the boards of commissioners of Wahkiakum, Pacific, Clatsop and Columbia counties met Monday in Cathlamet to go over their efforts. The group began meeting about a year ago at the suggestion of Wahkiakum commissioners in order to represent what they see as the interests of area commercial and recreational fishermen after fishery managers allowed very short lower river spring salmon seasons...
I don't know about you, but I'm ready to make up my mind on the proposal to form the Columbia-Pacific National Heritage Area and include Wahkiakum County in it. Business organizations throughout the region requested the formation of the NHA as a means of creating an internationally recognized brand for the area that could be used in marketing. The idea came out of the coalition formed in the Lewis and Clark bicentennial. Over the years, The Eagle has had occasional stories about the movement, but they've been few and far between because...
I’m sure everyone is aware that the iconic Rosburg Store is closed as of Monday, the 17th. The only information I have is that it will be closed indefinitely. What a gorgeous weekend. Now it looks like some more unwelcome rain and stormy weather is on the agenda for the rest of the week. News from Naselle: There will be a District track meet on Thursday at Raymond. Girl’s pole vault will start at 3:30 p.m. and the other events will follow. Go Comets! Are you looking for something fun to do on a weekend or two this summer? Hosts are needed at th...
Wahkiakum High School Students are raising money for miracles. The effort is part of Doernbecher's Kids Making Miracles program which involves school youth raising money for the hospital. Senior Bradlee Pugh brought the idea to the WHS student council. He remembered it from the years he attended school in...
Whether or not Wahkiakum County is included in a proposed Columbia/Pacific National Heritage Area (NHA) will be decided very soon. ShoreBank Enterprise Cascadia is wrapping up a feasibility study to be submitted to the National Park Service on the proposed NHA. The proposal came out of regional efforts to promote tourism and related business during the bicentennial of the Lewis & Clark Voyage of Discovery. Businesses, chambers of commerce and similar organizations have promoted the idea as a means of marketing the region and also helping...
Two men have sued the Naselle/Grays River Valley School District over alleged violations of the state's Open Public Meetings Act. The men, Steve R. Gacke and Steven Sultemeier, claim the district board of directors failed to follow the public meetings law when it held meetings in February and March. Sultemeier had been a member of the district board of directors but resigned because of his concerns the board didn't give proper notification to the public about the meetings. Listed as defendants are the school district and Hollis Fletcher, board...
Kudos to Steven Sultemeier and Steve Gacke for taking the Naselle/Grays River Valley School Board of Directors to task over alleged violations of the state Open Public Meetings Act. In a complaint filed May 6 in Pacific County Superior Court, the men claim the school board violated the act by holding a special meeting March 9 without posting the required 24 hours notice in advance for the public, despite Sultemeier's warning that the notice was required. The men also claim that the board's agendas for the March 9 meeting and a February 11...
I hope everyone enjoyed the couple of days of sunshine we had last weekend, and that all the Moms had a wonderful day on Sunday. I had a wonderful weekend with some of our family in Oregon. The weather wasn’t the greatest but the company was. The weatherman says we may have some nice days this week, so I’m hoping to get the lawn mowed before it’s tall enough to make into hay. News from Naselle: The school year is winding down for this year with a little more than a month to go. Lots of last minute activities for many of our students, espec...
Wahkiakum County Commissioners Dan Cothren and Blair Brady on Tuesday expressed their opposition to the plan to spread biosolids on the Grays River ranch of Phil and Sulema Zerr. At the board's weekly meeting Tuesday, Health and Human Services Director Judy Bright commented that she had attended the Department of Ecology's Monday public input meeting in Grays River and was impressed at how well the meeting went and how well informed the people were. Cothren agreed and added he had received many phone calls in the past few days from constituents...
NorthernStar Natural Gas, LLC, announced Tuesday afternoon it is suspending its attempt to site a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at Bradwood, Ore. “The extended delays in the processing of state and federal permits for Bradwood Landing and the difficult investment environment have forced us to suspend development,” NorthernStar President Paul Soanes said in a press release. “In particular, the challenging regulatory environment gives investors pause, especially considering that Bradwood Landing would have such a positive impact on the Nor...
Wahkiakum County commissioners addressed issues ranging from habitat conservation to speed limits at their meeting Tuesday. With Commissioner Lisa Marsyla out of town, colleagues Dan Cothren and Blair Brady gave initial support for Columbia Land Trust to convert Elochoman Valley timberland into a habitat conservation area. The land trust, a private, non-profit group with a goal of preserving natural habitat, wants to buy a stretch of timberland in the upper Elochoman Valley, roughly lying between the river and the county road. The land trust...
Death by 1,000 cuts was the way one opponent of NorthernStar's proposed Bradwood Landing liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant described his group's strategy. It seems to have worked, for NorthernStar announced Tuesday afternoon it is suspending the project because of delays in permitting and "the difficult investment environment." Groups such as Wahkiakum Friends of the River and Columbia Riverkeeper opposed the plant every step of the way, saying the environmental and community safety concerns outweighed any economic benefit of the plant. While...
A Puget Island man has been charged with two counts of animal cruelty in the second degree. Wahkiakum County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Bigelow filed the charges Monday in Wahkiakum District Court against East Sunny Sands resident Terry Vik. The charges are gross misdemeanors with a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail and or a $1,000 fine. The charges stem from investigations by the Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Office and the Cowlitz Humane Society. Responding to complaints from neighbors of Vik, officers executed a search warrant on land owned or...
