  • County's real estate market tightens up

    Diana Zimmerman|Apr 27, 2017

It’s still early, but as of last Monday, there were only 22 homes available for sale at real estate offices in Wahkiakum County, according to Kay Cochran of Lower Columbia Realty. Last year, Wahkiakum County realtors sold 65 residential properties. “Last year was great,” Bill Wilkins of Windermere Realty wrote in an email on Tuesday. “It started early and stayed busy all through the year. We anticipated this year to be even busier but it has not started out that way. As in most cities in the Nor...

  • Commissioners work to allay concerns over dredging impacts

    Rick Nelson|Apr 27, 2017

Wahkiakum County officials continue to wrestle with issues surrounding their effort to set up a long term dredge spoils disposal program for eroding beaches. Acting as commissioners for flood zone control districts (FZCD), commissioners are applying to the US Army Corps of Engineers for permits to set a 10-year beach nourishment program. As part of the program, commissioners need each property owner in a district to sign a right-of-entry easment to allow dredging crews to work on their shoreline property, and there are some property owners who...

  • Writer amused by previous submission

    Apr 27, 2017

To The Eagle: Thank you for publishing Mr. Bouchard’s long, ill-worded, and childish letter. His rambling diatribe was amusing, an incoherent fantasy. Thank goodness we dodged that terrible bullet (HRC), when we elected @POTUS. Mike Swift Cathlamet...

  • Every silver lining has a black cloud

    Apr 27, 2017

To The Eagle: At last I've been outed! And by my down-the-road neighbor, too (J.B.Bouchard in last week's Eagle). I truly thought my dark and twisted logic was known only to my wife, and maybe a couple of my senior wolfhounds (the new puppy has no clue). One minor caveat: I'm not exactly a Trump supporter, having warned in these pages that he was executing a hostile takeover of the Republican party. But when we got to the finish line, he got my vote by default. T'was de fault of Hilary, who, as the only other real choice, had a long track...

  • Clarifications

    Apr 27, 2017

Local building officials have asked for a clarification regarding last week's article about a garage constructed too close to a neighbor's house. The article said, "Years ago, a neighbor constructed a garage and put the back wall three feet from their building, which is closer than the town's building ordinance allows." Further on, it quotes a speaker saying the construction "happened over 15 years ago." The officials say a 1994 aerial photo shows the garage in place at that time....

  • Local creamery focus of Portland podcast

    Kay Chamberlain|Apr 27, 2017

PRETTY DAMP--After a gorgeous day last Friday, which saw temperatures climb clear up to 70 degrees, the weekend was nothing at all like that! We were back to the rain and the gloom and the doom and some windy moments as well! The only thing I can say about it is that it certainly saved me from feeling guilty about not doing any yardwork, as it was definitely more of a book reading, movie watching, inside kind of day! I hear that we might wind up with a bit of decent weather this weekend, but when they say "three days" of sun, or partial sun,...

  • It's time for Washington to take a test drive

Reema Griffith, Executive Director, Washington State Transportation Commission|Apr 27, 2017

It has been a reliable workhorse for decades, but its future sustainability is uncertain as vehicles become more fuel-efficient and alternative fuel sources emerge. We all want to lower our costs of owning a car and many of us want to leave less of a mark on the environment. As gas consumption goes down – for all the right reasons – gas tax revenues also go down, which leads to less available funding to build and mai...
