  • National Night Out

    Aug 3, 2017

Liz Beutler and Sherill Bollen prepared root beer floats for firefighters, law enforcement personnel, and friends at Tuesday's National Night Out event at the Puget Island Fire Department. Annie Howell, a volunteer for the fire department and daughter of Undersheriff Gary Howell, was the prime mover for this particular event. She and the PI Fire Chief Mike Beutler agreed it was a good opportunity for both departments to spend some time together, build relationships, and have some fun. Right:...

  • Book about Stephen Biko changes woman's life

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 3, 2017

Laura Ray's life was completely altered by a book about a man who lived and died half a world away from her own in the Pacific Northwest. The book put her on a journey that some might dream of, but never fulfill. Her fascination became a kind of obsession that drove her to Africa to visit the man's grave, not once but twice, and deposited her, unknowing, straight into the last day of a young child's life. The book, Cry Freedom, was about a black man in South Africa during Apartheid. The man was...

  • Timberlands closed because of fire danger

    Aug 3, 2017

Recent hot and dry weather have led local timber companies to close their lands. Here is a Wednesday morning announcement of the closures: Grays Harbor, Pacific, and Wahkiakum County large private forest lands are closed due to extreme heat and fire danger. A collaboration of several private landowners has led to closing the forest to public access. Campbell Global, Greenwood Resources, Hancock Forest Management and Olympic Resource Management have closed their lands this week. Other landowners may close or have already closed their lands. The...

  • PUD commission discards survey idea

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 3, 2017

The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners listened to reports on Tuesday and announced that they had decided to forgo plans to survey public interest in the possibility of the utility taking on a water system that is currently being managed by the Town of Cathlamet. “As I was primary instigator behind that discussion,” Commissioner Bob Jungers said, “upon further consideration, it seems to me the probability of the poll returning a very ambiguous result has dampened my enthusiasm for p...

  • Diking commissioners address Islanders' concerns about spray

    Rick Nelson|Aug 3, 2017

Commissioners from Consolidated Diking District No. 1 visited the Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners Tuesday to discuss their vegetation management program. Two weeks ago, Puget Island residents told the county board someone had sprayed herbicide along dike roads, killing brush and blackberries, and often, they added, the applicators had sprayed high into trees and well into private property. County Public Works Director Chuck Beyer on that day identified the diking district as the applicat...

  • More comments on the back and forth

    Aug 3, 2017

To The Eagle: Keep in mind, I am chuckling as I write this serious comment. Mostly because I find it so absurd, the place our 26 percent of eligible voters put us in. Also I don’t want to cry, literally. I find it difficult to stomach, when someone is in disagreement with the direction of the government, called such as “whining,” while at the same time ‘whines’ about our last president and the not elected candidate. Such a weak argument is needed to defend our president, who has had more White House turmoil in six months than Obama’s eight year...

  • Save your car

    Aug 3, 2017

To The Eagle: The photograph of a fully involved (completely ablaze) car in The Eagle of July 20 (Sheriff's Report, page 5) makes a dramatic point that having a proper fire extinguisher, readily available, can limit damage to a minimum, as opposed to a complete loss of the vehicle. The highway between Cathlamet and Longview is no place to expect rapid response from emergency personnel. A fuel leak in the engine compartment can be readily extinguished by the driver who has an extinguisher handy. The alternative is the metal skeleton of a...

  • Info offered about electoral college

    Aug 3, 2017
    1

To The Eagle: I was surprised to read some folks see the Electoral College as simply an “anachronistic” practice. Great word anachronistic, as many today also believe it applies to capitalism or socialism, depending on your viewpoint. Others believe the word applies to personal liberty, state sovereignty and even our constitution. Anyone who reads the pros and cons of our electoral college, quickly becomes aware that our EC was designed to protect a unique federalism with self-regulating states and ensuring individual citizen liberty. “In...

  • Wooden, classic boats this weekend

    Aug 3, 2017

By Diana Zimmerman The Cathlamet Wooden and Classic Boat Festival is this weekend at the Elochoman Slough Marina. “Classic means not just totally wooden, but wooden and fiberglass is permissible,” Julius Dalzell, one of the event organizers explained. “It’s going to be a good show, I think. It’s supposed to cool down for the weekend.” Dalzell is hoping for 30 boats, from kayaks to a 36-foot U.S. Coast Guard Motor Life Boat. Visitors will have a chance to vote for their favorite boats and winners will be announced on Sunday afternoon....

  • Commissioners pick Heywood for judge

    Rick Nelson|Aug 3, 2017

Effective September 1, Wahkiakum County will have a new district court judge. William Faubion, a 38-year veteran of the bench, is retiring at the end of August, and Tuesday, Wahkiakum County commissioners voted 2-1 to appoint Skamokawa attorney Heidi Heywood to complete the remainder of his term. The position will be up for election in 2018 ballots. Commissioners Blair Brady, Mike Backman and Dan Cothren had received names of two candidates to fill the position, Heywood and Cathlamet attorney Tim Hanigan. Commissioners met in a short executive...

  • County OK's agreement for Corps 408 review

    Rick Nelson|Aug 3, 2017

Setting up a long-term beach nourishment program for four Wahkiakum County flood control zone district (FCZD) beaches took a small step forward Tuesday. Commissioners voted to sign a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the US Army Corps of Engineers for processing a 408 Section review of the potential impacts of the proposed sand deposits on the Columbia River shipping channel and the channel for the ferry Oscar B. County Public Works Director Chuck Beyer said he and the county's consulting engineers handling the application had discussed the...

  • Human jawbone found near Brookfield

    Aug 3, 2017

A Hancock Timber employee was out with his dog at Brookfield when he found a human jawbone on the beach July 26, according to Wahkiakum County Prosecuting Attorney and Coroner Daniel Bigelow. The man notified the Wahkiakum County Sheriff’s Office, and personnel found additional fragments after a more detailed search. The remains are now being examined by Katherine Taylor, the forensic anthropologist for the state of Washington. Bigelow said there may be some genetic material attached to the jawbone. A DNA test has not been ruled out, it w...

  • Remember to use 360 area code for local calls

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 3, 2017

TOASTY--By the time you read this, we should have experienced some very hot temperatures and I hope you're faring okay during this first full week of August. Needless to say, it seems almost impossible that we are into yet another month, which is synonymous with the Wahkiakum County Fair, football practice and school shopping, as the buses will be rolling out before you know it! Greetings from the fair office! Hope everyone is busy making things to enter in the fair. The T-Building has a new coat of paint; thanks to the Wahkiakum Fair Foundation for doing this as their project this year. Also, Neil has been working hard on the insulation in the Youth Building and the back corner is almost done. Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who have made these projects happen. • Jacob Hammond joins county fair royalty

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 3, 2017

Jacob Hammond has been involved with the Wahkiakum County Fair in one way or another for over a decade. This year, he decided that he wanted to express his appreciation by vying for a fair crown, which would allow him to formally fundraise for the event. "I wanted to run because I like helping the fair," Hammond said. "I realized that the fair princesses can benefit the fair a lot by raising money and I wanted to do that. Where are the guys? When they decided I could run for Fair King, I...
