Town of Cathlamet officials reported progress on a variety of issues at the monthly town council meeting on Monday. Public Works Director Duncan Cruickshank said the town crew had found two large water leaks and repaired them. They were leaking 60,000 gallons or more per day, he said. Working with a consultant, they’ve found many other small leaks, probably caused by deteriorating band joints; Cruickshank called it “death by 1,000 cuts." Early in the summer, a major leak in a main running through the Birnie Creek channel almost drained the sys...
To The Eagle: I agree with Paul Schreiber's letter of last week. The letter by the former deputy that was essentially whining about Mark Howie and how he runs the sheriff department, was totally off base. According to the fired for cause former deputy, Sheriff Howie has caused several other deputies to either quit or feel dissatisfied. I am curious as to what is in his background that led to his firing in the first place? A reasonable suggestion to the former deputy would be to pull up his big boy panties and stick to fact rather than sour...
To The Eagle: Ironic that The Eagle joined in the hysteria generated by media monopolies last week in pretending that their 1st Amendment rights were under attack by the president while exercising those same 1st Amendment rights. The president has criticized #FakeNews not actual reporting. Examples of what POTUS refers to are legion. Just this week, ABC News ran a breaking story with companion video of an illegal alien being arrested by ICE. It was presented as the shocking story of a father wrenched from the arms of his pregnant “wife” whi...

SMOKY START--As this week began, it was a pretty smoky Sunday morning, and forecasters say that we'll have more of that until mid-week. When it's smoky, it's a good idea to limit our time outside and if we have to be out there, then buy a really good mask that can filter out the fine particles that can cause lung damage. I guess we can all hope and pray that these wild fires come to an end soon so we can all breathe a little easier and our brave, over-worked fire crews can catch a break as well. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from...

The pace of highway work in the Cathlamet area is picking up. Both re-decking and paint crews are making progress on the Puget Island bridge. A striping crew has been working on SR 4 through Cathlamet to realign lanes and create new left turn lanes. And this week, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has announced that slide repair work at Milepost 50 on SR 4 near Stella will begin next Monday. The department also plans to upgrade crosswalks on Main Street in Cathlamet this summer. The project includes elimination of some...

Some people come only one time because they are new to the area and needed to get a start. Many are bi-monthly partakers. The pantry is now feeding approximately 400 people from 90 families. To The Eagle: When I read the letters to the editor during this local election cycle I can not help but notice how personal some comments have become. If you read comments made about the Assessor Mr. Coons you might come away thinking the guy breaths fire and has horns on his head. The comments made about the sheriff’s leadership of his department might lead one to think that he should never be left alone with an armed deputy. The gentleman making the comments about Sheriff Howie claims to have had a 42 year career in law enforcement. That i...
Thursday, August 30, will be a free launch day at the Elochoman Slough Marina, thanks to the generosity of Wahkiakum County Port 1 commissioners. When organizers for the annual Warriors and Widows Salmon Derby approached the port for one flat launch rate for volunteers, the commissioners agreed to make it a free launch day for all. "I think there is going to be a big turn out again," Commissioner Brett Deaton said of the event. "I hope they catch some fish," Commissioner Bob Kizziar added. In ot...
There were no changes in results as Wahkiakum County election officers tallied late election day votes on Thursday. In the race for county assessor, Brian McClain leads incumbent Bill Coons 1,019-810. Both ran as Independents. In the race for US Congress, District 3, incumbent Republican Jaime Herrera Beutler tallied 946 votes. Her nearest challenger is Democrat Carolyn Long with 530 votes. Others seeking the position were Democrat David McDevitt 132, Republican Michael Cortney 87, Republican Earl Bowerman 75, Democrat Dorothy Gasqué 45, and...
MOISTURE--When I went to bed last Friday night, it was lightly misting out here in West Valley. When I woke up, it was good and wet outside, and then the skies really opened up and we got some real rain! I was thrilled to see it as we surely needed a good drenching to help bring our fire danger down a little and help those creeks and streams a bit. THIS IS IT: FAIR TIME--I hope the raindrops stay away for the last three days of this coming week, as it's time for the 110th Annual Wahkiakum County...
