SMOKY START--As this week began, it was a pretty smoky Sunday morning, and forecasters say that we'll have more of that until mid-week. When it's smoky, it's a good idea to limit our time outside and if we have to be out there, then buy a really good mask that can filter out the fine particles that can cause lung damage. I guess we can all hope and pray that these wild fires come to an end soon so we can all breathe a little easier and our brave, over-worked fire crews can catch a break as well. Fifteen individuals ran a rerouted Bald Eagles Day 5k/2-mile fun run on July 21 because of construction occurring on the Puget Island Bridge. Participants ran behind town, past the museum, through the marina and braved a small stretch on the highway before turning around and retracing their steps back to the Cathlamet Pharmacy for the finish. The pace of highway work in the Cathlamet area is picking up. Both re-decking and paint crews are making progress on the Puget Island bridge. A striping crew has been working on SR 4 through Cathlamet to realign lanes and create new left turn lanes. And this week, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has announced that slide repair work at Milepost 50 on SR 4 near Stella will begin next Monday. Wahkiakum County has a little gem of a place in Rosburg at Johnson Park called West End Food Pantry (WEFP). The pantry is a 501 C-3 non-profit organization that is open to the public every Thursday 1-5 p.m., or by appointment. There are no restrictions as to who can get food. Some people come only one time because they are new to the area and needed to get a start. Many are bi-monthly partakers. The pantry is now feeding approximately 400 people from 90 families. Lifelong Wahkiakum County resident, Robert A. 'Bob' Hendrickson, 88, of Cathlamet passed away on July 30, 2018. Bob was born at the family home on Puget Island on August 10, 1929 to Swedish immigrants Albin and Elin (Olsson) Hendrickson. Bob grew up on the Puget Island family farm and later graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1947. Walter "Wally" David Wright, 71, of Cathlamet, passed away peacefully Monday, August 6th at the Frontier Nursing Home in Longview. Wally was born April 30, 1947, in Longview, to Arthur and Effie (Faubion) Wright. He lived in Cathlamet most of his life, graduating from Wahkiakum High School, Lower Columbia College, and Western Washington University. The fourth annual Wahkiakum Warriors & Widows Salmon Derby will be held Aug 29 and 30 with a welcome salmon dinner at the Elochoman Marina. Organizers want to provide a unique Northwest experience for the Warriors & Widows from the Warrior Transition Battalion at Madigan Army Medical Center Joint Base Lewis McCord.
