    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 12, 2018

The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners met quickly on July 3 to listen to reports and approve a capital asset policy. Commissioner Dennis Reid said he had been approached by a business owner who had asked if there was anything the PUD could do to fix the costs for water and sewer, which are set by the Town of Cathlamet. “Such a high percentage of this business’s income is going to pay water and sewer that it’s a tough deal. It was interesting that he reached out to me. I told him I coul...

  • Commissioners handle varied business

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 12, 2018

The Wahkiakum County Commissioners met July 3 to field questions and concerns from residents and handle county business. Puget Island resident Nicki Seiler presented a letter signed by several of her neighbors regarding 6-8 parcels in the Pancake Point flood zone. The parcels were not included by Wahkiakum County in the list of recommended sites to receive dredge spoils under the permit currently in process. The letter was a formalized request to commissioners that efforts include these...

  • Public comes out to hear candidates

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 5, 2018

Last Wednesday, a candidate forum was held before a full house at the Skamokawa Grange. Each candidate was given an opportunity to introduce themselves before answering questions from the audience. The first group to take the stage were candidates for the Washington State House of Representatives, including Jim Walsh and Erin Frasier for Position 1; and Brian Blake and Roy David Parsons for Position 2. Joel McEntire, a candidate for Position 2, was deployed as a US Marine in Afghanistan and had...

  • Why didn't they protest then?

    Jul 5, 2018

To The Eagle: I will quote again from Thomas Sowell: “If people in the media cannot decide whether they are in the business of reporting news or manufacturing propaganda, it is all the more important that the public understand that difference and choose their news sources accordingly.” I am referring to the photo of the little crying girl supposedly separated from her family at the Mexico-US border. As most of us now know, that never happened. The child was right there next to her mother with the border patrol. There is a picture to prove it....

  • Town water crew responds to 2 big leaks

    Jul 5, 2018

To The Eagle: The town’s water system has had two large leaks this past week. During both events, there were neighbors who helped trouble shoot which I sincerely appreciate. Our leak on 3rd Street has really damaged the road there, and I will work to get that fixed as quickly as possible. The other leak, which we had a hard time finding, will be much more difficult to repair. It occurred on Sunday night and caused homeowners effected to have low to no pressure at their homes. We lost about a quarter of our reservoir storage in around two h...

  • We should have a say, resident says about lot

    Jul 5, 2018

To The Eagle: I don’t know if you saw last week’s letter in The Eagle, but there will be more to come about the mayor having the town treasurer pay $1,000 earnest money to purchase a parking lot, prior to their executive session. Later, it was on the town council’s upcoming agenda under “Property acquisition – action expected.” This was at least three months ago. What happened between then and their last June 18 meeting, I don’t know. Did the Department of Ecology do a soil inspection and sign off, allowing change of ownership, or are we now...

  • New coffee shop open in Cathlamet

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 5, 2018

A new coffee shop, Patty Cakes Cafe and Roasting, is open for business in downtown Cathlamet. The owner, Patty Vezaldenos, grew up in Stockton, California. After moving to the St. Helen's/Scappoose area in 1980, she lived in Columbia County for over 30 years and had three drive through espresso shops and a roasting and baking company. She sold the business several years ago. "I've been wanting coffee back in my life ever since," Vezaldenos said. But life had her going in other directions. She...

  • Bald Eagle Days are approaching quickly

    Kay Chamberlain|Jul 5, 2018

WEEKEND--This past weekend wasn't the best one we've had, but it wasn't too bad either. We saw a few, very light sprinkles on Saturday morning but for the most part, it was dry and kind of humid, so one could still get out there and work in the yard or tackle other outdoor duties. If you were lucky, you just got to enjoy the day and had a play day instead of a work day! Sunday saw some misty moments as well, but its showers were brief and it wasn't too bad. While I woke up to wetness on Monday morning, they say we're heating up this week, so I...

  • Health clinic adds new addiction treatment

    Rick Nelson|Jun 28, 2018

Wahkiakum County commissioners discussed addiction treatment and other health care issues when they met Tuesday in Cathlamet. Dian Cooper, executive director of the Cowlitz Family Health Clinic, said staff of the center's clinics will soon be certified to prescribe a new treatment of opiate addiction and overdoses, suboxone. Once certified, clinic staff will be able to administer the treatment to the public and in the county jail. The new treatment, however, is expensive, about $100 per month for generic brands. "So, before we start using it,...

  • Island bridge painters finish first section

    Rick Nelson|Jun 28, 2018

By Rick Nelson State highway construction work around Cathlamet is almost ready to enter new stages. Painters on the Puget Island bridge last week completed work on their first section and are moving curtains to begin work on the next portion. The subcontractor who will replace roadway decking on the bridge will mobilize on July 9, Tamara Greenwell, Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) communications officer, reported this week. They'll do much of their work at night, 9 p.m. to 4...

  • After adapting, I wouldn't live anywhere else

    Jun 28, 2018

To The Eagle: I had to re-read Elizabeth Brinner’s article in last week’s Eagle a couple of times to make sure it was a serious letter. Initially I thought it was a poor attempt at satire. Not so I guess. I’m assuming she’s recently moved from Seattle, Portland or a city of similar size, which would explain her problem adjusting to the lifestyle we all enjoy living in Wahkiakum County. Before retiring to Cathlamet, I left a big city, fast paced, professional career working under neon lights and in front of a computer screen all day. After work,...

  • Parking lot purchase shows lack of foresight

    Jun 28, 2018

To The Eagle: The recent vote by the Cathlamet town Council to purchase the property owned by former Council member Bernadette Goodroe was clearly unethical and an obvious gift of public funds. When the existing gas station and auto repair shop were removed the site went through a remediation process to remove the majority of the contamination, but due to technical difficulties the site could not be fully abated. Consequently, the State of Washington Department of Ecology placed a restricted covenant on the property because residual...

  • Southern cyclists raise funds to stop trafficking

    Diana Zimmerman|Jun 28, 2018

Eleven strangers have embarked on an adventure to travel the west coast from Seattle to San Diego for a common cause--to raise funds for a refuge in Texas to help victims of sex trafficking and to bring awareness to a problem that is quietly pervasive even in the United States. “It started last year with three girls,” Isabel Mayne, a senior at the University of Texas said. “Two went to UT and the other went to the University of Arkansas. They were all just friends who got together and start...
