NICE WEEKEND--While we ended last Friday with a few sprinkles here in West Valley, it wasn't much, and the clouds on Saturday morning cleared off and gave a perfect day for the Kite Festival at Vista Park. It also made shopping at the Puget Island Garage and Yard Sale a lot nicer as well. Things warmed up a little more on Sunday but with a nice breeze here, it was just about perfect. However, by nightfall, we saw some big raindrops start to fall, and then some bright, flashing lightning cross the sky and after that, some of the loudest, house...

The Wahkiakum Chamber board wants to see local storefronts filled, merchants happy and visitors big-eyed. The Chamber is looking to fill two board member positions on their Board of Directors. Ideally, they would like one of the spots to be filled by someone that lives or works in the west end of the county in Grays River or Rosburg as they strive to better represent the entire county and extend their connections. If your mission is inline with theirs this may be the position for you. Serving on the board is a rewarding experience and an...

Along with the Kite Festival and the Puget Island Garage Sale there was the national Amateur Radio Field Day wherein roughly 40,000 amateur radio operators all over the country take their radios and antennas out of their houses and into a field for 24 hours to test emergency preparedness. Our county's radio club, N7WAH, with the help of Wahkiakum PUD, Wahkiakum 4-H, Wahkiakum School District and Smokey Waters set up at a baseball...

The Cathlamet Town Council on Monday voted to buy a parking lot and unleashed a storm of reaction from town citizens. The property in question is on the corner of Main and Butler streets adjacent to the Bank of Pacific parking lot. Owner is Bernadette Goodroe, a former council member. The council reconvened in open session after an executive session to discuss the possible real estate purchase, and Mayor Dale Jacobson called for a motion to purchase the lot. "They were asking $75,000, and I was able to get it down to $68,000," Jacobson said. "I...
To The Eagle: George Wehrfritz advances an idea that “The Eagle” has been too free in giving space to “an internet-style troll “ who is attacking candidates running for office. He prescribes limiting the privilege of expressing one’s opinions in the newspaper to just one letter per person per campaign cycle. (He himself has written two so far.) He seems to be disturbed by the expression of points of view in conflict with his own. He lumps them all together as the work of one person he calls a troll. That may be his individual perceptio...

To The Eagle: Anyone going through Cathlamet this spring has to be impressed by how much nicer it looks, and those responsible deserve a large "thank-you." The new sign at the courthouse looks so much better than the rotted one. The Wahkiakum Bloomers did a beautiful job of placing vibrant blue pots of red and white flowers along Main Street, and quite a few businesses followed suite, brightening up the downtown area and highlighting the painting of several stores in that area. Julius Dalzell whacked the brush and weeds along the waterfront tra...

SUMMER HAS BEGUN--The hot weather showed up just in time to welcome Summer, although if it gets as hot as they say it might, I won't be overly thrilled, as anything over 75 seems a bit too much for me. But the way forecasts keep changing, who knows, it may be back to "Spring-like" weather by the time you read this, and that would suit me just fine. With fire danger already at high levels, more dry conditions must be met with extreme caution in all things outdoors which could involve a heat source. It may be legal to burn, or BBQ, but common...

To The Eagle: Last night at the town council meeting, they had an executive session to discuss the purchase of the small parking lot between Butler Street and the Bank of the Pacific. When they came out of session, a motion was made to purchase the lot for $68,000. After a second another council member raised discussion regarding the assessed value being $34,000 and the appraised value being $38,000 when she was interrupted by Council Member Sue Cameron claiming a point of order. She claimed that because these numbers were discussed in...
The Cathlamet Town Council adopted an update of the town park and recreation plan and addressed other business at the monthly meeting on Monday. Town Attorney Heidi Heywood suggested a clarification on a page with a map showing the proposed waterfront park on the old sewage lagoon site. Land at the edge of the site is owned by Port District 1, but the town has an easement there for the outfall pipe for the town sewer system. Bob Kizziar, a member of the Port 1 board of commissioners, pointed out that the map shows vendor kiosks on the easement....

It is my commitment to this county to continue upholding the highest level of integrity and honesty within my office. A lot of community members throughout the county know me from Bank of the Pacific where I worked for nearly ten years. After leaving the bank, I gained employment in the Wahkiakum County Auditor’s Office. While wor...
